For Sale: 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle in Holly Ridge, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

Some muscle cars were history by 1972, but could still buy a Chevrolet Chevelle SS, right up to the mighty SS 454 version. 1972 was the last of the second generation Chevelle and little was changed outside of an updated grille and new front parking lights. And the SS 454 was virtually identical to the ’71 edition, powered by the LS5 “Turbo Jet” 454 cu-in V8. But it seemed like the LS5 took a huge horsepower hit, 270 hp in 1972 versus 365 hp the previous year. The engine was the same, but General Motors made the switch in reporting horsepower from the SAE Gross standard in previous years to SAE Net in ’72. The numbers make the ’72 SS 454 look like a weak sister next to the ’71 model, and they often get a bad reputation because of it, when they are truly alike.

Only 5,333 SS 454 Sport Coupes were built in 1972 before the great LS5 engine faded into history. Something unavailable in earlier Chevelles, for 1972 you can identify a genuine SS 454 by the “W” in the VIN code, like this restored, well optioned Cranberry Red Sport Coupe, a beautiful example of the last of the LS5 breed.
