1961-63 "Bullet Bird," the fourth-generation 1964-66 Ford
Thunderbird was informally known as the "Flair Bird" or "Glamour
Bird" and featured handsome, all-new styling. Some innovations
intended for the new Thunderbird line were delayed for the launch
year and only reached production in 1965. Among them were new front
disc brakes made standard by 1965 and eye-catching sequential rear
turn-signal indicators, which faced approval delays in certain
states. Sales remained strong, despite significant internal
competition from the newly introduced Mustang. As always, the
Thunderbird offered plenty of power and delivered effortless
cruising with the standard 4-barrel 390 CI V-8 engine uprated to
315 horsepower for 1966.The new Thunderbirds were very well
received at launch for 1964, a landmark year when the entire Ford
model line earned Motor Trend magazine "Car of the Year" honors.
