The "W" Cat with big claws is the lucky recipient of a Rotisserie
restoration to the highest level! This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7
7.0-Litre GT-E is one of 256 examples produced for the model year
with a 427ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission.
This Cougar XR-7 GT-E left the factory finished in Cardinal Red
over Dark Red Leather upholstery. Equipment includes silver-colored
lower trim, dark grille and taillight accents, covered headlights,
a hood scoop, power steering, power brakes, and the Super
Competition Handling Package. The car was delivered new to Times
Square L-M INC of Erie, Pennsylvania , in March 1968. The car is
said to have been refurbished under previous ownership. This W-code
Cougar GT-E is now offered with an Deluxe Marti report and a clean
Florida title in the seller's name.
The car was finished from the factory in Cardinal Red (2008-A) with
silver-colored trim on its lower sections. Features include
blacked-out grille and taillamp trim, hidden headlights, a
simulated hood scoop, chrome bumpers, and quad exhaust pipes.
Silver and chrome-plated styled steel wheels are mounted with (NEW)
red-stripe BFGoodrich tires. The GT-E's standard Super Competition
Handling Package featured stiffer springs plus a larger-diameter
sway bar, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok
axle ratio. A full-size spare wheel and tire are located in the
trunk.
The cabin features red leather seats with matching carpets and
trim. Equipment includes a center console, a Philco AM radio, and a
clock. A wood-rimmed tilting steering wheel fronts instrumentation
that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and
gauges monitoring amperage, fuel level, and coolant temperature,
while an oil-pressure gauge is mounted on the glovebox door. The
five-digit odometer shows 79,449 miles.
The 7.0-liter V8-alternately known as a 427 side-oiler-was rated at
390 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque when new and is fed by a
Holley four-barrel carburetor. The lower block area is cross-bolted
to the main-bearing caps, and the engine has a hydraulic camshaft,
high-strength pistons and connecting rods, and heavy-duty valve
springs. The oil was changed and fluids checked in preparation for
the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Select-Shift
Merc-O-Matic C6 three-speed automatic transmission. The Deluxe
Marti report decodes the car's trim tag and also documents selected
features, build dates, and production numbers for XR-7 GT-E cars
with the 427ci engine. A total of 256 GT-E Cougars were built for
the 1968 model year.
