This is the legendary GTO - the one that many auto enthusiasts
credit for starting the muscle car craze that continues to this
day. Featured in numerous TV shows and movies, the GTO is one of
the most famous and important cars in automotive history. It even
had a hit song written about it called "Little GTO" by Ronnie and
the Daytonas. One of the memorable lines in the song includes,
"three deuces and a 4-speed, and a 389" ... which the restoration
of this car included.
While there were many choices of American muscle cars from
Detroit's auto makers in the '60's, what made the GTO one of the
most sought-after was the incredible performance it offered. It was
the car to have at the dragstrip, or on the street on Saturday
nights if you were serious about winning. Built on GM's A-body
platform with Pontiac's exclusive "Wide-Trac" stance, the Tri-Power
GTO's offered amazing handling, ride comfort, and acceleration for
the era.
This particular example started with the best of the best factory
combinations - a GTO specified as a convertible with air
conditioning, and power top, windows, steering, and brakes. During
the meticulous rotisserie restoration, the 389 was upgraded to
Pontiac's famous Tri-Power three 2-barrel carburetion, a 4-speed,
and the show-quality black exterior with matching interior and
top.
