While the 1958 Ford Thunderbird is often credited with establishing
the personal luxury car segment, the Studebaker Golden Hawk can lay
claim to earlier origins. Building on the success of the 1955
Speedster, Studebaker introduced the Golden Hawk as the pinnacle of
its refreshed 1956 Hawk lineup. This model artfully combined the
sleek profile and pillarless doors of its Starliner predecessor
with Packard's potent 352 cubic-inch V8. Marketed as "a new kind of
family car... conceived with a sports car," the Golden Hawk offered
a versatile five-passenger configuration. The timeless low, sleek
design, penned by Robert Bourke, has since become a favored canvas
for bespoke customizations, as exemplified by the "resto-modded"
example presented here.
This 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk has undergone a comprehensive
restoration and modification under previous ownership. The iconic
Hawk bodywork, revised with custom fiberglass fins and
tighter-fitting bumpers, is presented in a lustrous metallic
burgundy finish. Powering this bespoke creation is a modern General
Motors LS1 5.7-liter V8, paired with a 4L60E four-speed automatic
transmission, replacing the original Packard-sourced powerplant.
The chassis has been enhanced with modern four-wheel disc brakes
and power steering, updating the driving experience to contemporary
standards. The interior showcases exquisite craftsmanship,
featuring hand-stitched beige leather upholstery over modified
late-model GTO bucket seats. A two-tone leather theme extends
throughout, complemented by a custom center console and brown
leather-wrapped steering wheel. Modern amenities include power
windows, air conditioning, and Pioneer stereo.
Showing just 675 miles on its digital odometer, said to be accurate
following the completion of its mechanical transformation, this
Golden Hawk represents a harmonious blend of classic design and
