1 of 3 built total! The Max Wedge was a limited production, factory
built race car. Even more rare is the High Compression version
which raises the horsepower even higher. Now finding an H.C. motor
in a convertible is about as unlikely as meeting Elvis in a
Walmart! This is that car, only 3 people in the world ordered a
Polara 500 convertible and checked the box for a 425 hp motor. Not
only was this car verified by Mopar guru Galen Govier, but it was
owned by him as well! Listed in Darrell Davis's Ram Charger book as
authentic which was based on Chrysler microfilm and it has copy of
IBM card. It sold new at Gardner Motor Co in Danville VA before
making its way to California. In 2006 it was treated to a full
concourse restoration using all #s matching, date coded parts. Only
133 miles since, it has been a part of a 60 car Mopar
collection.
EXTERIOR: It lived in California and had only minimal rust. Unlike
many of the hardtops used for racing, it has never been tubbed,
caged or wrecked. Restored 18 years ago and the body is still
showing like new. No rust or damage, it is straight and fits right.
Repainted it's original Onyx Black and it is polished like a
mirror. The red painted band running down each side adds some pop.
All the chrome and trim is straight and shiny. All the
weatherstrips were replaced, glass is very nice, and the power
convertible top is like new. It still rolls on original spinner
hubcaps and reproduction tires.
INTERIOR: The red and black looks great and being a 500 it has
bucket seats and console. The seats were rebuilt with firm cushions
and reproduction upholstery, the rear seat is shaped like bucket
seats. It has matching reproduction door panels. The dash and
console are original and show very well. Of course, it has the push
button automatic and a rare manual choke. Everything looks unabused
and fits right. The interior lights work.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: This is what makes this car so special: Not
only is it the Ram Charger high performance motor, it's the Ram
Charger ultra-high performance motor! Correct date coded H.C.
block, heads, intake, carbs, and distributor. It comes from the
factory with 13.25:1 compression and of course the dual quads. The
radiator, pulleys, wiring, exhaust manifolds, choke cable, brake
line and brackets are all original Max Wedge parts. There are
unique changes in the motor compartment from the factory to fit
this beastly motor. The bracing was cut out of the hood, brake line
was rerouted, voltage regulator and starter relay were relocated,
passenger fender had holes drilled for wiring clips and it had a
choke cable going through the firewall. The engine bay is clean
metal painted slick black and the fender tag is still attached. It
is very nicely detailed.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Under the trunk lid and the jamb are painted
gloss black. Inside has the complete liner kit and rubber mat. The
jack and rim are restored, the tire is a matching reproduction.
UNDERSIDE: Factory dumps, yes 3 inch pipes right off the manifolds
has dumps from the factory! The complete exhaust system is correct
reproduction. The brakes have 10 inch drums and The e-brake cables
were rerouted for the exhaust. All of the suspension, steering and
brakes were restored. The fuel system was replaced. Looking up at
the motor it is spotless, that's a unique $1000 oil pan! Correct
727 Torqueflite automatic trans and rebuilt driveshaft. The
original 4.56 Sure Grip gears were replaced with 3.91s so you don't
have to carry an extra gas can with you. The floors are pristine
metal painted gloss black.
SERVICE: We inspected the car and put thread seal on rear exhaust
manifold bolts, cleaned turn signal switch, replaced a resister for
the blower and replaced high beam indicator bulb.
True racers were snapping up the 2 door sedans, I suspect this was
someone that wanted to spank some unexpecting street racers! This
is your chance to own one of the rarest muscle cars on the planet,
worthy of the best collection.
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for
virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant
amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my
professional impression of the vehicle. Our salesmen are happy to
assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are
answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video
that explains the car's condition in detail. **These cars are
displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car, make an
appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment
there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car,
your admission will be refunded, and you will be given a 1 year
membership.
