Vehicle Description
1951 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
"One of the most versatile trucks in the entire Chevrolet line is
the Pickup, an all purpose vehicle of use to almost any business.
Features include large load space, hardwood flooring, two stake
pockets to permit installation of extended sides for extra load
height or for a canopy top. Front bumper provides protection for
the chassis and front end sheet metal." From the 1951 Chevy truck
sales brochure, a colorful tome featuring the entire and extensive
truck line.
For consignment, a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 pickup showing an
unverifiable 7,623 miles and the recipient of a frame off
restoration that included a new box, tailgate and glass. The truck
is so nice, it was used in the 2019 film Mob Town but ended up
getting whacked and put on the cutting room floor. But it's ready
for its next starring role in your garage!
Exterior
Red is a sure bet on a classic truck and there are few rides among
our 940 vehicles inventory that scream Americana like a vintage,
red pickup truck and this one represents! Even the crossmembers
behind the chrome grille are red as are the wheels behind dog dish
hubcaps with red painted stamped Chevrolet on each. Chef's kiss! On
one side of the cowl, we have a series of louvered cabin vents
while the driver's has the benefit of a side mirror mounted on the
left. In profile, the rounded hood, rounded fenders, and rounded
roof of the cab are offset by the straight lines of the truck's bed
and tailgate and the entire truck is bookended by nicely rounded
chrome bumpers. Honey colored oak planks floor the bed, intertwined
with red rails and stainless hardware, all in spectacular
condition. With the exception of a small area of bubbling on a
fender, the paint, metal, and trim work are fantastic on the
truck.
Interior
Gray tweed and cloth make up the elegant door panels looking fresh
and tidy. The bench seat shares the materials and what was likely a
former farm truck at some point is now dressed for a night out on
the town! A Lecarra steering wheel provides a stout replacement for
the factory wheel and the dash is now a modernized version as well,
with gauges embedded in billet bezels on the painted red panel.
Shiny metal fronts the center of the dash and extends to the
passenger side and it's in great shape. A Lokar shifter rises from
the floor, wears a black leather boot, and is surrounded by tan
carpet with gray mats. The gray cloth headliner, visors, and back
wall covering have some major sag and will need to be repaired or
replaced to perfect the interior.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a tidy 350ci V8 with an Edelbrock intake and
Holley 600cfm 4-barrel carburetor. It's tied to a TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission sending power to the Dana 44 rear. Bright
orange valve covers and red wires highlight this clean powerplant
which has plenty of room in the bay. Power brakes are supplied as
discs in front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with vibrant red paint popping amongst the
satin black frame. Minimal surface rust mostly reserved for the
exhaust which is a dual system that encounters FlowMaster mufflers
before exiting via chrome tips behind the rear wheels. Leaf spring
suspension is found front and rear. We note a few drops of oil on
the flywheel cover but the rest of the underside is clean and
dry.
Drive-Ability
The comfortable tweed bench provides a high perch needed to guide
this high hooded truck onto the test loop. The engine provides
plenty of power and sounds great while the truck tracks, turns, and
brakes very nicely. All functions including lights, gauges, and
turn signals, work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Vintage American trucks will never cease to be cool. If they could
talk, they would tell tales of hard work be it in the city or out
in the country. You can tell from the period sales brochures, these
were not marketed as commuter vehicles in any way. They were
purpose built and meant to get the job done. Today, surviving and
restored trucks are not just classics, but tell the story of a
niche vehicle when the country was a bit younger. This Chevy is a
fine example and should be on your radar if you're in the
market.
