Vehicle Description
1948 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
Safety and convenience were big selling points for the 3100 in
1948. In the sales brochures, it boasted of "observation car
vision" and "nu-vue rear corner windows" touting the fact that
there was 22% more glass in the cabin gained by enlarging the
V-type windshield and the 'smart looking curved windows in the
corner to eliminate blind spots.'"
For consignment, a 1948 Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck with 2,736
miles shown, not verifiable due to the title reading mileage
exempt. This truck was custom built professionally by the late,
noted builder Patrick Dykes in Casa Grande, Arizona. It was
completely disassembled at the time of rebuild and restoration in
2015, and represents a spectacular legacy to Patrick's Antique
Trucks and is now ready to grace the garage of the next owner.
Exterior
Finished in Forester Green, the truck stands out with coverage
that's as clean as fresh as a new snowfall. This shade of green is
fittingly vintage, and the chrome and stainless contrasting accents
include the large, horizontal bars of the front grille, the
bumpers, and the window reveals. Side emblems and red painted dog
dish hubcaps let onlookers know what brand they're drooling over,
and the stamped Chevrolet on back is enveloped in bright, white
paint. Red paint also fills the embossed Chevrolet emblem up front
and Thriftmaster on the side emblem. In the bed, beautifully
stained fine grained wood alternates with stainless rails and it's
accompanied by a leather trunk. Below the rear bumper, two stacked
chrome exhaust tips point towards the corner. It's all quite nice
and the only imperfections we note is a single small scratch and
some touched up chips on a panel edge.
Interior
The saddle and green leather inside is some of the softest leather
we've felt in a while! It starts on the door panels with a saddle
upper and pleated, green lower, nicely applied to the inner doors.
The bucket seats bring you into the modern age with tall backs,
multiple adjustable elements, a center console, and armrests. It
continues the pattern of the door with smooth saddle panels and
pleated inserts, along with green piping that brings it all
together. A smooth, green 3 spoke steering wheel front the dash
which is vintage and simple as well, with the exception of a
Mooneyes tachometer on the column in front of deco font gauges. In
the middle, a vintage AM radio with ivory buttons and a chrome
accent that spans the dash. The floor mounted shifter rises with a
crook to reach the driver and is surrounded by a low pile brown
carpet and a tweed headliner is bisected by a black rail, looking
stunning.
Drivetrain
A clean and polished 261ci inline 6 cylinder is under the bulbous
hood. It has a Fenton intake and dual 1-barrel carburetors on top.
A Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission is underfoot and sends power
to the rear wheels with 3.55 gearing. Power brakes are supplied
with discs in front and drums in the rear. A chrome valve cover,
polished alternator and air filter covers along with a gold
anodized radiator makes for an attractive engine bay worthy of
popping the hood for shows.
Undercarriage
Stainless dual exhaust, including the mufflers, team with a
polished rear differential cover to dress up the underside. The
frame is black, body panels are green, and the wood shows from
underneath making the belly of the truck a fairly nice visual
treat. There's minimal surface rust, a drop of oil on the pan and a
drop of transmission fluid on the transmission, but the rest is
clean and dry. Leaf spring suspension is utilized front and
rear.
Drive-Ability
The soft and supple leather feels almost too nice to sit on, but we
have to do what we have to do, and they are seats after all. The
truck starts up with a pleasant rumble and from this comfortable
throne, we roll onto the test loop where the car runs, shifts,
tracks, and turns beautifully. And bonus, everything that's
expected to function does so! While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Every truck in the 48 page Chevrolet Truck Advance Design booklet
from 1948 has a business name painted on the side. No one thought
these work trucks would be coveted and classic 75 years later, much
less still around. They were purpose built, no frills work trucks
with as much safety and comfort as they could squeeze into them,
and not much more. This truck takes the classic to the next level
and is a fine, collector grade version of an American workhorse.
Don't blink, or this green beauty will be gone.
