Vehicle Description
1979 Jeep CJ7
The 32 page Jeep sales brochure is a visual feast with page after
page of CJ's, Wagoneers, and Cherokees in natural settings
including a boulder field, sand dunes, a farm, a snowy mountain,
and much more. There are fewer photos of Jeeps doing domestic
chores like grocery shopping, lawn and garden, and hauling horses.
Today's brochures might look different, and the photos reversed. On
the CJ page it proclaims, "Whether you dress it to the hilt or
drive the basic model, one thing's for sure. When you drive a CJ,
the end of the road is just the beginning of the fun!"
For consignment, a 1979 Jeep C7 showing a non verifiable 86,570
miles as the title reads mileage exempt, wearing lots of newer
parts on its 350ci V8 including intake and carburetor, rear brakes,
and radiator.
Note: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices
installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and
federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on
public highways in your area
Exterior
A fresh coat of Dark Cherry Red Crystal shines bright in two stage
coverage of this little 4x4. The seven slot grille is painted to
match and is fronted by a square, chrome bumper while other
polished metal bits also contrast with the red. That includes the
hood latches and hinges, headlight rings, cowl vent, window hinges
and large side mirrors, rear bumper, and gas filler dress up plate.
Nicely done ghost flames lick over the hood. There are glimpses of
the polished headers underneath as well, and they lead to black
side pipes that pick up on the black roll bar, fender flares, and
the visible interior. The 15-inch American Racing wheels are great
looking additions here and the bikini top is here and the soft top,
doors, and extra set of wheels come with this CJ. The only
imperfections we find is some deglazing of the wheels around the
outer rim.
Interior
Black vinyl bucket seats are covered in cloth flaming 8 ball seat
covers while a spare tire is mounted in the rhino coated back. Our
consignor states that the rear seat will come with the vehicle. An
APC steering wheel greets the driver and leads to a sparse but tidy
and efficient dashboard with gauges and knobs on a painted metal
panel. An AM/FM/CD radio is onboard and a shiny grab handle is
provided to the passenger. The floor is rhino coated and covered in
rubber weather mats and houses the Hurst handled shifter and skull
topped range selector. A pair of speakers sit just in front of the
shifters.
Drivetrain
Unlatching the hood reveals a super clean 350ci V8 with an
Edelbrock intake and a 4-barrel carburetor between flame stamped
and polished valve covers. A 4-speed manual transmission sends
power to the AMC 20 axle in back and a Dana 30 in front, both with
3.54 gears. Disc brakes are found up front with drums in the back.
Our consignor states intake, carb, master cylinder, slave and
clutch cylinder, pressure plate, flywheel, rear brakes and drums,
and wheel cylinder have all been replaced.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with plenty of surface rust, oil drops
and residue, and general patina throughout. The dual exhaust comes
off the headers and enters into glasspack style mufflers which run
down the side right before the pipe opens to the atmosphere. There
are no catalytic converters on the Jeep. Leaf springs serve as
suspension in front and rear of this CJ.
Drive-Ability
It's a Jeep thing. If you haven't driven one with the door off, put
it on your bucket list because it's a barrel of laughs. The 350
blasts to life sounding not unlike some of our inventory muscle
cars and we roll the 31 inch knobby tires onto the blacktop for a
function test. There's plenty of power on tap here and this
surefooted red CJ gains speed with each shift, tracks straight, and
the brakes function as they should. All other functions such as
lights, radio, signals, work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
As Jeep puts it, "Jeep wrote the book on 4 wheel drive and the CJ's
were there when the book came out. For sheer driving fun and
unparalleled off road performance, CJ is the way to go.". We
couldn't agree more, and if your occasional off road treks are
mixed with more common parking lot ventures, so be it! Endlessly
fun and versatile, this V8 powered CJ7 takes the fun factor up a
few notches, and looks good doing it!
