HISTORY OF THE TRIUMPH TR6:
Regarded by many as the most appealing of the T-series Triumphs,
the TR6 debuted for the 1969 model year. Mechanically evolved from
the one-year-only TR5/TR250, the TR6 shared its predecessor's
chassis and drivetrain while receiving refinements such as
suspension improvements and wider 15" wheels, giving the car a
leaner, lower stance and more composed handling.
Power came from a 2.5-liter straight-six equipped with twin
Zenith-Stromberg carburetors in U.S. specification, producing just
over 100 horsepower. A traditional wood dashboard, standard front
disc brakes, and options including Overdrive, chrome wire wheels,
and a removable hardtop made the TR6 highly customizable.
A delight to drive both then and now, the TR6 consistently ranks
high on lists of iconic British sports cars. Its unmistakable
styling and lively character continue to appeal to discerning
drivers and collectors alike.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED:
This 1972 Triumph TR6 with factory Overdrive is finished in its
factory-correct color combination of New White over Black interior
with a matching Black folding convertible top. According to the
accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, Car
No. CC80318UO was completed at the Coventry works on March 15,
1972, and dispatched new to British Leyland Motors, Inc. of
Baltimore, Maryland.
While early history is largely undocumented, the car entered its
most recent long-term ownership in December 2015. A seasoned member
of the St. Louis Triumph Owners Association (SLTOA), the late owner
kept this TR6 among several Triumphs in his collection just south
of St. Louis.
Although restoration records were not retained, the car clearly
benefits from a substantial body-off-frame restoration. Evidence of
frame repairs, fresh hardware, refinished components, and
consistent detailing can be seen throughout the underside. Numerous
items-including the front coil springs, brake calipers, and the
engine block and cylinder head-show signs of removal, refinishing,
and careful reinstallation.
While the straight-six engine is finished in a non-factory color,
it is the original numbers-matching unit, verified by the Heritage
Certificate. The engine has been upgraded with desirable
performance enhancements such as dual SU carburetors, an aluminum
radiator, and PerTronix electronic ignition.
The interior retains a mostly stock appearance aside from the
ignition-switch relocation from beneath the dash to a more
convenient position below the switch plinth ahead of the shifter.
Exterior features include dual racing-style bullet mirrors, a
chrome luggage rack, and handsome 72-spoke chrome wire wheels.
Recent service performed by IT'S ALIVE! includes installation of a
new radiator air duct with correct hardware, ensuring proper
airflow to the aluminum radiator and maintaining optimal cooling
during spirited driving.
IT'S ALIVE! is pleased to offer this thoughtfully upgraded TR6 with
Wire Wheels and Overdrive to the enthusiast who values both the
heritage and the driving experience of one of Triumph's most
celebrated sports cars.
