One of the most sought-after Fords from the 1950's is the 1956
Fairlane Crown Victoria. Going by the trim tag, this particular
Crown Vic decodes as a solid top car, yet it has the transparent
top that was found on the very rare, Skyliner. It is unknown how
exactly this beauty came by its top, but it was a modification
offered by dealers back in the day. The craftsmanship it took to
make the transformation here was done very well and professionally
and the cowl tag is the only indication we've found that it didn't
actually come this way from the factory.
And we can certainly understand why such a change was made! Ford
first offered the "glass-top" Skyliner model in 1954, apparently
intrigued by the bubble tops that had been offered for Ford
convertibles in the 1940s. They would be available only for the
1954-1956 model years. The 1956 Skyliner drew so few orders that it
was discontinued mid-year and only 602 cars were sold. They were
identical to the Crown Victoria coupe, with the front part of the
roof ahead of the B-pillar tiara trim replaced with transparent
Perspex and an aluminized fabric panel that could be zipped over to
keep the inside temperatures down.
This car is an older restoration in handsome and factory correct
Fiesta Red and Colonial White that has been well cared for and
carefully driven. It features accessory rear fender skirts, Ford
wire wheel hubcaps, a rear-mounted spare in a continental kit and
dual exhausts with Cherry Bomb glass pack type exhaust for a
wonderfully nostalgic sound.
Powering this classic is a 200-horspower, 312 cubic-inch,
Thunderbird V8 engine with 4-barrel carburetor and Ford-O-Matic
transmission. The engine is said to have been rebuilt and runs
beautifully. A fresh service and sorting with a vintage car
specialist included removal and flushing of the fuel tank,
carburetor rebuild, brake work, new rear pinion seal, ignition
points, four new tires and more to ensure this Ford runs and drives
great. A receipt for all the work performed come with the car.
