Vehicle Description
1968 AMC AMX
When you see an "X" in the name of a car, it can mean a variety of
things. First, it could simply be an X, the letter. It could also
indicate all wheel drive such a BMW X5, or it might signify 10 as
in the Mitsubishi Evolution X and Touareg X, or Experimental as in
the case of the Pontiac GXP, the Buick GNX and the AMC AMX.
For consignment, a 1968 AMC AMX with a title verified 39,560 actual
miles, owned by our consignor since 2011 and during his ownership,
he has replaced the interior, fuel system, rear suspension, brake
system, Magnum 500 wheels, rubber seals, as well as restored the
trunk, lights, and chrome.
Exterior
Classic Black is augmented by painted red stripes on our car which
travel over the hood, across the roof, and down onto the trunk. The
front bumper is sculpted and cut to fit around the headlights and
form the bottom edge of the grille, and house large, round driving
lights. The unique hood bulges rise to the outside and taper back
and are enhanced with five faux louvers on each side. The metal
door handles are distinctly AMC, flat tabs that are flush with the
door, and the side mirrors are beautifully chromed with a ridge
design around the perimeter. The car's substantial rear wing rises
high above simple horizontal tail lights that flank a red band to
complete the bar, and a straight, chrome bumper sits above two
protruding straight tailpipes. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels provide an
appropriately sporty look to this 2 seat muscle car. Imperfections
are limited to a dent in the lower edge behind a rear wheel, and
some body work and underlyingbubbling in the driver's lower rear
quarter panel.
Interior
Vertical pleats in the insert of the black vinyl door panels where
a large armrest and door pull piece as well as metallic hardware
and both doors present in clean condition. Turn those pleats
sideways and that's the style of the seat inserts on the tall
bucket black seats, both also in great shape. The rear of the car
is covered in black low pile carpet and speakers are mounted on the
upper panel. The 3 spoke steering wheel leads to a textured plastic
dash where gauges are inset and in direct sightline to the driver.
In the center stack, a perforated panel provides a speaker, while
an AMX plate and AM radio live a bit further down on the stack. A T
handled Hurst shifter rises from the floor that is covered nicely
with black carpet and protected by bright red AMX branded floor
mats. A ribbed headliner tops an interior that is in fine
condition.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, we find a very clean 290ci V8, rated at 200
horsepower and topped with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on an
Offenhauser intake manifold between chrome valve covers. Colored
wire loom tubes dress up the engine bay and along with the red
ignition wires, retain some of the AMC brand colors. A Borg Warner
T10 4-speed manual transmission sends power to the AMC 20 axle in
back while drum brakes on all four wheels slow the momentum. Per
our consignor, power steering has been added.
Undercarriage
Clean, dry, minimal surface rust, and dual exhaust that flow from
headers to a pair of Flowmaster mufflers before heading out back.
Suspension is made up of coil springs in front and leaf springs in
back.
Drive-Ability
The 290 announces its vitality through the dual exhaust as soon as
it ignites, and off we go onto the test loop. The interior feels
almost showroom fresh and the car tracks as well as it probably did
in 1968 when the first owner took delivery. Power is good and
handling is nice and the drum brakes do their job. We're happy to
report that all functions on board including lights, gauges, horn,
vents, and others all work as they are intended to. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
If you're not part of the ardent AMC crowd, we encourage you to
consider signing up and this AMX is a great way to get initiated!
These are interesting cars that were produced for just three years
with less than 20,000 units in existence. A two seater from a now
orphan American brand with unique lines in a relatively rare model.
Sounds like the results of the "experiment" were a success!
