Vehicle Description
Introduced in 1950, the 356 model was the genesis of the Porsche
brand. Created by Ferdinand Ferry Porsche, the namesake son of the
company's founder Ferdinand Porsche, the 356 proved the idea of a
rear-engine, lite-weight sports car that was fun to drive and easy
to operate. This same ethos later spawned the 356's replacement,
the Porsche 911, that is still in production to this day. The 356
utilized an air cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine
that was mounted to the rear of a unitized chassis pan. The
suspension components, fuel tank, and seats were also bolted to
this pan, and then the curvaceous steel body was lowered down onto
the completed chassis pan. This construction method, and some
mechanical components, were shared with Volkswagen at the time.
This was as a result of Ferdinand Porsche's involvement in
engineering for Volkswagen during the war, and the lack of
manufacturing available in Germany directly thereafter. However,
with the Porsche, the engine was more powerful, the body much
lighter, and the ergonomics much more refined. This made the 356 a
multi-use sports car that could be raced or toured with equal
success. The 356B model cabriolet pictured here for sale has a very
unique history. Sold brand new by Porsche dealer Pardee & Mozart in
Palo Alta, California on October 12th, 1961, it remained in the
care of one family and in California until it's sale in 2022. This
fully documented, numbers matched B model cabriolet has received
one repaint in the 1990's, along with an engine overhaul that
increased displacement to 1,750cc. This overhaul also included AA
Performance Products cylinders, forged JE pistons, and an
aftermarket performance camshaft. The four-speed gearbox is easy to
use, along with the manual steering and big aluminum drum brakes.
The thirty plus year old paint shows well, while the fabric top,
interior upholstery and carpets are in as new condition. The
overall driving experience of this classic Porsche is that of an
eager to rev, toss able, and most importantly fun automobile, just
as Ferry Porsche intended. This 356B cabriolet is now again for
sale with factory tool roll, a Kardex, the original bill of sale,
manufacturers literature, sales brochure, and clean title. Contact
