Vehicle Description
1952 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
Some changes came for the Advance-Design pick up line in 1952. This
was the first year of the push button outer door handles, changed
from the lever style of previous years. The speedometer increased
to 90 mph from 80 and was surrounded by a body colored dash instead
of chrome. From 1947 to 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in
sales in the United States when GMC versions were taken into
account.
For consignment, a 1952 Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck with a
consignor stated original drivetrain and a rust free body on this
Arizona transplant.
Exterior
Looking like something off a postcard, this Mariner Blue 5 window
truck represents one of the most common trucks of the era in fine
fashion. Pontoon fenders and a bulbous hood was the style of the
day and square bodies were nearly a decade away. Even the cab wears
a rounded roofline and the straight lines that bisect the truck
include the running board and the bed sides. Dual tail light and
flags highlight the back of the truck wear Chevrolet is enhanced
with bright white paint and exhaust tips are dressed up with chrome
deflectors. The bed itself is lined with honey colored oak planks
intermingled with painted aluminum rails, all in great condition.
15-inch wheels carry dog dish hubcaps with red painted Chevrolet
and now you have a truck that includes red, white, and blue! The
paint and body are in great shape and imperfections are limited to
some bubbling and a chip on the hood edge.
Interior
A black vinyl door card rises over lined gray painted door panels
and both doors are in good shape. The black vinyl bench seat
presents in stitched patterns that run vertically and there's just
some slight wear and compression on the driver's side, but overall
in great condition. Gray continues on the simple and smooth
steering wheel which shares its column with the clamp on turn
signal unit standard for the era. The dash is simple, clean, gray,
and housing two main gauges adorned with art deco style font while
the center vented grate is metal topped but dash colored. A tall
shifter rises from the floor which is nicely covered in the period
rubber floor covering and the black headliner above is in excellent
overall condition.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a spotless 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder engine rated
at 92 horsepower and fueled via a 1-barrel carburetor. Our
consignor states the engine was rebuilt approximately 1,000 miles
ago. A 3-speed manual transmission moves this truck and sends power
to the rear axle with 4.11 gears. As was standard for the period,
drum brakes are found on all four corners. The engine bay is show
worthy.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust and no grease build up
on the knuckles. We note some oil on the transmission pan,
crossbeam, and oil pan but the rear diff is dry. Header like
exhaust manifolds result in dual exhaust from the inline six and
the pipes travel straight back to the tail without the intrusion or
restrictions of mufflers. Leaf springs are mounted front and back
to soften bumps in the road.
Drive-Ability
As expected, the exhaust tone of the six is augmented by the lack
of mufflers and you'd swear there's a V8 under the hood. The
comfortable cabin provides a fine perch from which to put this
truck through the test loop, checking each function along the way
and appreciating the originality. She propels forward with ease,
tracks well, and of course, allows excellent visibility. Just
remember how wide those fenders are and how high that hood! The
limited functionality of this former work truck all operate as
intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Americana to the bone, this blue Chevrolet represents a time when
if you saw a truck like this, there was purpose to its presence. It
had work to do and faithfully carried the worker to provide a
needed service in the community back when customer service and job
well done meant everything. Today, these classic trucks are coveted
collector pieces, great parade vehicles, and of course, welcome
show trucks. And this one is a fine, rust free example.
