The early to mid-1970s saw the last of the truly full-size
Oldsmobile Delta 88s, a model that Olds built for five decades
(1949-1999). The seventh-generation Delta 88 rode on a 124 inch
wheelbase under the GM B-Body, offered a long, sculpted design and
spacious interior, and featured standard equipment that included
vinyl or cloth upholstery, power front disc brakes, and "flo-thru"
ventilation.
Moving up from the base Delta 88 were the Custom and Royale series.
The Custom mainly added power steering, while the Royale could be
had with leather upholstery, a vinyl-covered roof, deluxe steering
wheel, and special paint package. The Royale was available as a
two-door hardtop or two-door convertible, which came with a power
top.
By 1974, the car's standard 350 cu-in engine got a boost to 180
horsepower, and that continued through 1975.
Collectors shopping this era of Oldsmobile Delta 88 will want to
seek out the Royale line, with its enhanced comfort. Convertibles
are especially attractive, mostly due to rarity. Of the 118,082
Delta 88 models built for 1975, only 7,181 were Royale
convertibles.
