Vehicle Description
1930 Ford Model A Roadster
The original 1930 Ford Model A was available in a variety of colors
to please the palate. It weighed 2,050 pounds and had 40 horsepower
at 2,220rpm. The only engine option was a 201ci inline 4 cylinder
with a 3-speed manual transmission. One must wonder what Henry Ford
would think of the thousands of Model A's that have been hot
rodded, lowered, updated, and fitted with powerful V8's, serving as
one of the most popular cars to build and modify. In any
configuration, they stand as an American classic 100 years after
being manufactured. We suspect 100 years from now, they'll still be
cool.
For consignment, a 1930 Ford Model A Roadster, fiberglass-bodied
with 350 that has aluminum heads and more, plus an absolute old
school presentation that has a wow factor just sitting still!
Exterior
Sure, the face of the car with the tall grille flanked by free
floating headlights is great, but it's the side view that is a
standout, from the exposed engine to the upright windshield, the
raked stance, and lines as clean as a red torpedo, and in this
case, two stage Fire Engine Red. 15-inch polished American Racing
Torque Thrust wheels are a fine choice here and with the staggered
size tires, harken back to a time of the earliest hot rodders.
Those white wall tires carry a date code of mid 2022 so they are
fresh and will remain so for a time depending on the number of
burnouts. The lifted butt is also classic hot rod with teardrop
taillights under a shaved trunk lid. The chrome linkage of the
steering knuckle and brake parts is a visual spectacle as are the
zoomie headers that extend like Wolverine's hand claws. We'll get
to the engine soon, but its spectacularly clean and polished
appearance is a major element to the exterior of the car and where
90% of the eyes will go when you arrive at the show. We could find
no major incursions or flaws on the exterior.
Interior
Black vinyl panels on the doors have bright red piping and red
stitching, a fitting match for the bucket seats which had red cloth
inserts surrounded by black vinyl, in very good condition. The
spokes of the steering wheel have slight patina and lead to a dash
formed from wood and housing numerous Faria gauges, silver rimmed
and positioned towards the center of the dash which is surrounded
in body colored framing. A stout B&M shifter rises from the
floor with the T-handled reverse lock out, and low pile black
carpet covers the floor along with mats to protect. In the trunk a
red painted fuel cell sits behind the battery and the carpet that
lines the compartment shows usage.
Drivetrain
Sitting proudly on the frame is a 350ci V8 with a Comp roller cam
that has .510i/520e lift and 230i/236e degrees of duration, Dart
aluminum heads, roller rockers, and ARP head bolts. A tunnel ram
intake supports twin Edelbrock carburetors and the TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission has a 2800-3200 rpm stall converter. In
back, a Ford 9" puts the power to the pavement. Everything is
spotless of course, from the finned and polished valve covers, to
the polished alternator, to the shiny headers. Disc brakes are in
front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
The tubular frame is painted red and topped with a wood platform
and everything appears clean and grease free. We do note some
tranny fluid on the pan. Suspension consists of a four bar with a
transverse leaf spring in front and four bar with coilovers in the
back.
Drive-Ability
We love the classic bathtub position of the cab, the open air
experience, and the glorious sound that emanates from the nearby
pipes. Off we roll old school style onto the test loop where the
car has amazing acceleration although we note a slight miss in the
engine. The brakes instill confidence and tracking is straight, but
we don't know how fast we're going or how far we've gone as the
speedometer and odometer are not working. All other functions do.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
