Vehicle Description
1968 Dodge Dart GT Hardtop
"The GT series: If you think these cars are good looking on the
outside, just wait till you open the door. Notice the lavish use of
rich, supple vinyl, on the seats and on the padded dash. Next check
out the sophisticated instrumentation and deluxe steering wheel."
From the Dodge Dart sales brochure which is replete with 60's era
youthful "flower power" and more innuendo than just about any
brochure we've seen. Given the images of young couples in the
brochure, we're miffed that more space wasn't dedicated to covering
the attributes of the back seat.
For consignment, a 1968 Dodge Dart GT hardtop with a rebuilt 318ci
V8 crowned by a Holley intake manifold and Edelbrock carburetor.
It's in great condition and is representative of some of the 60's
automotive trends that were prevalent at the time.
Exterior
Two stage Bright Red paint covers this car which exhibits the trend
of straight panels, right angles, perfectly vertical nose and tail.
The grille is a contoured array of horizontal grates housing the
marker lights and slightly protruding single headlights under a
nicely chromed front bumper. Side markers are consistent with 1968
Mopars as small rimmed round lights, while the shoulder line above
is arrow straight from nose to tail. The nicely proportioned car
maintains a horizontal equilibrium between sections and the
C-pillar veers from begin square by sloping dramatically to the
flat trunk lid while housing a curved rear window. In back, the
tail lights cant inward and a shiny aluminum panel covers the rear
fascia and includes the Dodge name and accent lines in black, all
looking very good. 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels live on the hubs with
staggered size tires. Nothing on the profile breaks the clean lines
but there is a Dodge fratzog down low and logo on the C-pilliar on
the vinyl top that is in excellent condition. And the paint is
amazing too and we were unable to find any exterior
imperfections.
Interior
Textured vinyl door cards flow from a black painted head and retain
a GT emblem. Low back bucket seats with simple stitch patterns in
black vinyl occupy the front and are in very good condition while
the back bench looks unused...so much for marketing. The unique
diamond shaped center console houses the metallic shifter and a
long flat panel that serves as the storage bin lid. A black
steering wheel heads the dash which retains its 60's style with
horizontal gauges across a single plane and the center splits an
upper and lower containing the vent/heat controls and AM radio is a
niceoriginal configuration. A slightly misaligned glove box door
completes the frame of the dashboard trim and low pile black carpet
covers the floor nicely mirrored by the black headliner above in
great condition. The trunk is spotless, walled by shiny paint and
covered by a plaid mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean but not flashing 318ci V8, topped by the
4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor sitting on top of a Holley intake.
1973 offers up the A904 3-speed automatic transmission that sends
power back to an 8 inch rear with 2.76 gears. The car is equipped
with power brakes in the disc front, drum rear configuration. Like
the rest of the paint, the red metal of the engine bay is
spotless.
Undercarriage
Wonderfully clean underneath with minimal surface rust, dry pans,
and knuckles that are free of grease. The dual exhaust travels into
Xlerator mufflers before exiting in the back. Torsion bar
suspension is found up front with leaf springs in the back. No
disappointments here, it's darn clean!
Drive-Ability
No disappointments here either as the 318 cuber sparks to life with
a muscular tone and the car performs beautifully on the test loop,
tracking straight, braking well, and providing plenty of
acceleration from the 3-speed. And bonus, everything intended to
function on the car, did! While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Stunning red paint with a black vinyl top makes a dramatic
presentation on this mid-level performance car, considered a small
car for the times, and marketed to the free love young demographic,
but probably ending up in more adult hands for people who were
looking to downsize from big 60's family cars. This is a remarkably
clean and original example that is show worthy.
