This Shelby 4000 Series 427 S/C Aluminum Cobra was built by Carroll
Shelby Enterprises a decade before he passed and is listed in
Edition 4 of The Shelby World Wide Registry.
Originally ordered 10/31/01 by Mr. Doug Hunter, chairman of the
Pueblo Motorsports Park, and owner of Local Motors Inc. dealership.
Doug and his son Tyler raced cars, this Cobra was built to Mr.
Hunter's exacting specifications. Mr. Hunter selected an alloy
body, rare 42 gallon tank, Trigo Halibrand wheels and 15" steering
wheel. Shelby's Manufacturer Statement of Origin states completion
on 01/18/02.
Mr. Hunter selected an alloy 427 side oiler, CSX block direct from
Carroll Shelby Enterprises. Curt Vogt of Cobra Automotive's
selected package included the 4 speed Jerico transmission, 3:54
rear end gearing, Centerforce alloy flywheel and dual friction
clutch, Hurst competition plus Shifter assembly as well as a
Lakewood scattershield. Mr. Hunter specified a dry sump system as
used by the factory in 1965 for their 427 competition models. He
also specified Weber carburetors.
Documentation of Mr. Hunter's ownership includes many rare
documents like the SAI Shipping/Packaging List, Cobra build
specifications form, SAI warranty registration card, Dyno sheets
and graphic data as well as Mr. Hunter's hand written application
for the World Wide Registry.
In 2003. Mr. Hunter brought this Cobra to SAAC Vegas 7 where
Carroll Shelby was reunited, sat in the car and signed the dash.
Photos and videos of the event are included with the sale.
In 2011, Mr. Hunter, always seeking to better this Cobra decided to
rebuilt the engine using, Carrillo rods, also changing the rings
and pistons at this time. The build was entrusted to Bob's Machine
and Balance in Pueblo Colorado.
Mr. Hunter kept until his untimely passing a few years ago. Tyler
Hunter, his son, sold the car to its most recent ownership, two
years ago. The previous owner having dual citizenship, he decided
to import this 427 S/C to the UK for his use and enjoyment. At this
time, the original color Red was changed to Black. The bare metal
repaint was performed in October-December 2022 to concours
standards by well-known and respected Somerset, UK based Charlie's
Classic & Custom Body & Paint Shop, also known and for their Aston
Martin fabrication and paint. In depth videos of Charlie's work on
this Cobra have been documented on YouTube. Charlie is also
recognizable from his debut on NBC's Hot Wheels Ultimate Challenge
with Jay Leno.
This CSX 4000 427 S/C was then given to Redline Engineering, also
in the UK where original AC mechanics as well as long time Cobra
experts Peter Ducket and Neil Fisher fine tuned all to
perfection.
Retaining residences in both the UK and US it was decided to return
this Cobra to the United States. Today, this Cobra is once again
registered and titled here in the United States.
Recently owned by as well-known Cobra collector-enthusiast, this
Cobra is one of many Cobras owned within the collection throughout
the years.
