For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Nova in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1970 Chevrolet Nova SS Tribute

254,242 Novas were produced and sold in 1970 and of them, 19,588 were SS performance models, less than 10%. 177 were Central Office Production Order cars, (COPO), of which 175 were converted to Yenko Novas. While Camaros are often the subject of SS and Yenko clones, the occasional Nova is also treated to such modifications and has an ardent following.

For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Nova SS tribute with a date-correct 402ci V8, owned by our consignor for 10 years and wearing the color with which it left the factory.

Exterior
While the SS became a performance model, it still sports some cosmetic cues that mere mortal Novas were not privy to. This includes of course SS badging on the grille and tail trim, 396 badges on the fenders, hood louvers, and fender vents. Panels gaps here are well minded here on a body that wears two stage Cortez Silver paint and sports a black vinyl top which slopes back around a flat rear window. Single headlights and smaller rectangular tail lights suited the pedestrian version well and helped this SS tribute achieve a sleeper status as the car borrows its profile from the normal street versions. Chrome and brightwork are in fine condition and so is the vinyl top which looks fresh. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels add a bit of sportiness to the car which otherwise would have hubcaps. Imperfections include some bubbling low on a door and some filler marks under paint.

Interior
Black vinyl door cards cleanly present with a band of woodgrain trim across the top and stitch patterned inserts, with both being clean and intact. Weave pattern center stripes highlight the tall black vinyl front bucket seats, also in great condition which is repeated on the back bench. A standard steering wheel with an SS badge leads to a decidedly horizontal gauge cluster in which the 120 mph speedometer is flanked by a clock and small tachometer, all behind a plexiglass cover. This radio delete car features a finned panel that mirrors other accents on the dash and a pod of four square gauges present in the center console, followed by an attractive shifter in a flat black plate. Speakers are in the footwells which are covered in black loop carpet with Nova embroidered mats on top. The headliner is high and tight and wears the shoulder belts while the trunk is clean and covered with several fitted mats.

Drivetrain
A very clean and date correct 402ci powerplant is under the hood, ready for show and go! It's fed fuel through a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 350 horsepower. The TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is from 1973 and sends power to the rear 12 bolt where our consignor states 3.55 gears reside with Positraction. 1969 Novas were the first to have power disc brakes up front as standard and this car has it, along with power drums in the rear.

Undercarriage
The clean engine bay is matched by the underside which is immaculate. Dual exhaust enters a set of Flowmaster mufflers and exits under the back of the car. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in back. There's no rust, errant fluids, nor road dirt underneath.

Drive-Ability
We can't tell you what time we started the test loop because the car's clock is not working. Meanwhile, the 402 rumbled forward with obvious power at hand, great straight tracking, and reliable braking. On our test of lights, the reverse lights were not illuminating. Everything else functioned as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Sometimes we see clones or tributes that are fantastic but fall slightly short when it comes to the powerplant. No judgement here, as a 350 crate motor will always get the job done! But here's a tribute with a date correct and size appropriate engine for just that extra step of authenticity. Great paint, a healthy sound, and all the makings of a Nova SS without the need of mortgaging the house to obtain it!
