Pontiac had no part in that sell out for its high performance Trans Am motors during the 70's and maintained 400 or 455 cid V8's even as the Corvettes and Camaros dropped to 350 cid and the Mustang down to 302 cid by mid decade.Back in 1978, the Pontiac's Advanced Design group helped introduce the world to the WS6 Trans Am Special Performance package. For a mere $324, Firebird owners who ticked the option were treated to a beefed-up rear anti-roll bar, additional bracing, wider 15-by-8-inch "snowflake" wheels, and a closer-ratio steering box. By 1980 the package cost $481.The WS6 package continued through the third generation, from 1982 to 1992. It became standard equipment for the Firebird Formula and GTA but was only an option for the base Trans Am model. The WS6 arrived in 1978 as an option for certain Firebird models, by 1979, the WS6 package became available for the Firebird Formula and the Trans Am. The WS6 package remained solely a handling upgrade that would become standard equipment on all third-generation (1982-1992) Firebird Formula and GTA models but still remained optional for the Trans Am. The WS6 option was no longer an option at the beginning of the fourth generation Firebird but was brought back in 1996 until the Firebird's ultimate demise in 2002.1981 was the last year of the 2nd generation Trans Am and although production for the legendary Trans Am marque did not end until 2002, from a purist's standpoint, the last true Trans Am in tune with the original Trans Am spirit ceased production in 1981 with the 2nd generation (1970-81), made famous by the 1977 and 1980 'Smokey and the Bandit' movies.This particular car still boasts its original 'Solar Gold Metallic' factory color paint and 'Camel Tan' interior and it is still virtually flawless since its frame off restoration with no history of any accidents or paintwork and no rust anywhere!
