The Lancia Aurelia is a car produced by Lancia from 1950 to 1958, more specifically the sedans were built from 1950 to January 1956. The Aurelia was presented to the public at the Turin Motor Show which opened on 4 May 1950: already in On that first occasion, in addition to the standard sedan (type B10), the platform chassis for bodybuilders (type B50) and the Cabriolet version by Pininfarina (made precisely on the basis of the B50 chassis) were exhibited. There were then "derivative" versions of the Aurelia, such as the B20 coupés and the B24 spiders. Since its appearance, the Aurelia has caused a sensation, also because, together with the contemporary Alfa Romeo 1900 and Fiat 1400, it represents the first truly "new" Italian automotive product of the post-war period. The displacement is 1754.90 cm³ (bore 70 mm, stroke 76 mm), the engine block is in light alloy, the cylinder liners are in cast iron (replaceable), the heads in aluminum alloy with cast iron valve seats, the crankshaft (very short) is made of special, hardened, counterweighted steel and rotates on 4 bronze supports: the diameter of the main journals is 55 mm, that of the crank pins is 45 mm. The other characteristics of the engine are: the distribution is via a central camshaft (i.e. placed in the corner formed by the two rows of cylinders) moved by a double roller chain (kept in tension by a pinion whose sliding support is loaded by the pressure existing in the engine lubrication ducts); the valves are in the head. In the transmission (with classic traction on the rear wheels), a major innovation is given by the fact that the clutch, gearbox and differential are made in a single unit, anchored to the frame and arranged at the rear axle: in this way the weight weighing on the rear wheels is increased, the burden on the front wheels is reduced and habitability is improved as the protuberance for changing between the front seat occupants is eliminated. The operating braking system (pedal) is hydraulic, with the rear brake drums positioned at the differential exit to reduce unsprung masses and for better cooling. The hand parking brake acts on the rear wheels via mechanical controls. As regards the suspensions: for the front end the classic Lancia layout with independent wheels, vertical column element (slightly inclined towards the wheel and incorporating helical spring and hydraulic shock absorber), coupling bar between the two wheels is maintained, while on the rear axle we end up creating an independent wheel suspension system, different and perhaps even simpler than that of the progenitor, with oblique triangles, helical springs and external arm hydraulic shock absorbers (Armstrong system). The steering is by worm screw and helical wheel (the tie rods have elastic bushings and ball joints), the normal driving position is on the right (only starting from 1951 is it possible to obtain left-hand driving and cars with this feature is identified by the suffix “S” following the normal model code).
The electrical system is 12 Volt, with a 200 Watt dynamo and a 50 Ampere battery. The bodywork is partly made of aluminum (doors, bumpers, rear fenders, bonnet, boot lid, luggage floor), has 4 doors (without central pillar), 4 lights, 5-6 seats, has glass for the windscreen and curved glass rear window; developed "in house", it is characterized by a very sober and elegant line, probably inspired by that of an Aprilia with bodywork by Pininfarina in the 1946-1948 period, but further modernized and softened. The wheelbase is 286 cm, the front and rear tracks are 128 and 130 cm respectively, the overall length is 442 cm, the width is 156 cm, the height is 150 cm, the minimum height from the ground is 15 cm . The turning diameter is 10.70 m. The wheels have a 165x400 rim with an enlarged base (4.50x16 for export) while the tires are 165x400 (5.50x16 for export). The initial color range includes six shades: black, blue, grey, hazelnut, green, amaranth. At the 1951 Turin Motor Show, therefore after about a year of production, coinciding with the release of the B20 coupé, the Aurelia sedan doubled, in the sense that the buyer could choose the engine to adopt: the 1.8 B10 liters and 56 HP or the enhanced version with 2 liters of displacement, called B21, which features a 69.5 HP engine similar to the one that equips the B20 coupé (which however is slightly more powerful, delivering 75 HP). The speed performance of the B21 naturally improves and the car can reach 145 km/h.
