The Fiat Campagnola is an off-road vehicle, produced by the FIAT car manufacturer, in the civilian versions 1101/1102 Campagnola, 1107A Nuova Campagnola, and in the military versions AR5x and AR76A from 1951 to 1987. At the beginning of the 1950s the Ministry of Defense announced a tender for the supply of a light off-road vehicle, to replace the tireless Jeeps inherited from the allies, now worn out and increasingly difficult to keep efficient. In reality, for some time FIAT had secretly begun the study, under the direction of engineer Giacosa, of a four-wheel drive vehicle, inspired by the American off-road vehicle, at the suggestion of the Ministry itself. The name of the "1101" project called "Alpina" was subsequently changed to "Campagnola" so as not to underline its military use, as the word Alpina recalled too much the army department of the same name and such a vehicle risked not finding consensus in the FIAT workers and in public opinion; the war had ended only a few years earlier and the memory was still too strong. FIAT and Alfa Romeo responded to the publication of the notice with the 1101 (Campagnola) and 1900 M (Militare) models respectively. At the date of publication of the tender, the Turin off-road vehicle was already in an advanced state of construction and had already accumulated hundreds of hours of testing, while Alfa Romeo had to make up for the time with a considerable design effort, managing to create a valid vehicle in just a few months. , using a Land Rover, which recently entered production, as the starting point for its prototype. The race was won by FIAT, although during the demonstration tests, the Alfa Romeo 1900 M (nicknamed ''Matta'' for its ability to go anywhere) proved superior in some cases. The Campagnola's advantage was the significantly lower cost compared to the Alfa Romeo prototype and its construction simplicity. La Campagnola is 3,775 m long, 1,600 m wide and 1,945 m high. The wheelbase is 1,365 m for a wheelbase of 2,300 m. The minimum height from the ground is 0.27 m. It was initially equipped with a 1900 cm³ (105,007) Fiat 4-cylinder petrol engine which developed 48 hp, supported from 1953 by a diesel engine producing only 40 hp. at 3200 rpm (305.007). In 1955 a new 45kW petrol engine and a 31.5kW diesel were fitted. The petrol versions exceeded 110 km/h, while the diesel engines could reach only 88 km/h. In 1955 the new AR55 version was introduced and at the same time the Campagnola 1101A with 105A.007 engine and the Campagnola 1102A Diesel. In 1960 the 1102B Diesel with 305D.007 engine (the same as the 615N1 van) went into production. The last update occurred in 1969 with the introduction of the 1102C Diesel with the new 237A.007 engine already mounted on the 241tn van. The AR59 version produced starting from 1959 was equipped with the 105B.017 engine with a 24V submersible electrical system, so as to facilitate its use even in extreme situations. The 1900 cc engine was a 4-cylinder petrol powered by a SOLEX 32 BIC then SOLEX 32x30 CBI carburettor with inverted intake and oil bath filter. Power went from the initial 53 HP to 64 HP in the final versions. The diesel engine was derived directly from the petrol block (replacing the head with a Ricardo Comet type swirl chamber); it initially developed 40 HP and then reached 48 HP in the latest version. In December 1951, two Fiat Campagnolas prepared by the Special Equipment section of Fiat and bodied by Savio in the long HT version, driven by Paolo Butti and Domenico Racca, made the round trip Algiers-Cape Town crossing in 11 days 4 hours and 54 minutes , setting a world record that has never been equalled.
