The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT is a sports car built by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo from 1974 to 1987 in the Arese plant.
In 1967 Alfa Romeo decided to begin the study for the creation of the coupé which was to replace the "Giulia GT" model in the 1970s. The main company directives are aimed at creating a car that can offer four comfortable seats (instead of the traditional 2+2) with a good-capacity boot. The objective was to combat the competition from compact sports sedans (such as the BMW 2002) which, offering similar performance and greater versatility of use, were enjoying considerable success throughout Europe.
Starting from the mechanical base of the "Giulia GT", in 1968 the "newly born" Italdesign of Giorgetto Giugiaro was given the task of carrying out the new project, in consideration of the fact that this designer had followed the birth and development of the "Giulia GT" in the years in which he worked at Bertone. At the same time, the Alfa style center will carry out a parallel project. The final result was a bodywork with the volumes moved backwards and the tail truncated.
At the time of launch in 1974 the basic engine consisted of the twin camshaft already fitted on the Alfetta sedan. This engine with a displacement of 1779 cm³ and delivering 122 HP at 5500 rpm allowed the Alfetta GT to reach 195 km/h. In 1976 the GT 1.6 1570 cm³ 109 HP at 5600 rpm was introduced, replacing the 1.8, the grille was revised, the fuel cap was visible and the Alfa Romeo writing was added on the back above the license plate; at the same time, the GTV 2.0 (1962 cm³) was born, delivering 122 HP at 5300 rpm. It differs from the 1.6 in terms of the bumper guards, two chrome inserts on the grille and grilles for the passenger compartment vent with GTV writing. In 1978 the 2.0 acquired 8 HP more reaching 130 HP at 5400 rpm, seals on the windscreen and rear window (previously glued) were introduced.
