Inspired by the sales success of sister division Plymouth's Road Runner, the general manager of Chrysler's Dodge Division requested a similar model from Dodge's styling department immediately. What they came up with was the Super Bee, intended to compete with the Road Runner as Dodge's low-priced, entry-level muscle car. This 1970 Super Bee is the real deal, ordered with a 383 C.I. "High Performance" V8 equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor being fed air through functional hood scoops. In 1970, it was conservatively rated at 335 horsepower, but period estimates have that number a lot higher because these engines were heavily under-rated for insurance reasons. This Super Bee's 383 "Magnum" is numbers-matching, the same engine the car came with right from the showroom floor! It's backed up by a correct "Heavy-Duty" 4-speed manual transmission, which, equipped with a Hurst "pistol-grip" shifter, adds to the car's attractive retro style and guarantees you look and feel like a badass behind the wheel. For 1970, the Super Bee received a redesign that would last for that single model year and a new front-end that consisted of a twin-looped front bumper that Dodge Public Relations referred to as "bumble bee wings". This car's "Top Banana" yellow paint looks fantastic laid out over this Dodge's laser-straight, curvy bodylines, and it's accented wonderfully by the contrasting black vinyl top and black band stripe wrapped around the tail. To further distinguish the Super Bee from the Road Runner, the Super Bee also used actual diecast chrome-plated "Bee" medallions. These three-dimensional medallions were prominently mounted in a raised position in the grille/hood area and the trunklid/taillight area, prominently showcasing the logo front and center. This car is rock-solid, with strong floors, frame rails, trunk, and door jambs to ease worries about drivability. Opening the twin doors and stepping inside is like taking a step back into 1970, where an original dashboard extends in front of you complete with factory gauges and dressed in attractive woodgrain trim. New-for-1970 "hi-back" bucket seats welcome you inside, dressed in gorgeous black vinyl trim and ensuring a comfortable and supportive ride. The car is shoed with a characteristic set of 15" Mopar rally wheels wrapped with Cooper Cobra RWL tires to give this Super Bee a factory-fresh, muscular appearance, making it look as if it just rolled off the showroom floor. Turn the key and that muscular 383 starts right up with a menacing growl, becoming clear the moment the throttle is pressed that there's a ton of power up and down the rev range. It runs and drives like a dream, and with a pistol-grip shifter, you'll always be smiling behind the wheel. An authentic Super Bee dressed up and down in an extremely attractive color combination and featuring the original "High Performance" 383 V8, this '69 Dodge is fast, fun, and ready to rock. There aren't too many out there with that kind of providence and pedigree, so don't let it pass you by! It's just a call away from being in your garage.
