Designed by the great Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin, the Mangusta, which was first offered in 1967, showcases the classic Italian wedge shape with classic American muscle. Featuring a heavily reinforced chassis based on the Vallelunga sports car, the Mangusta comes equipped with a mid-mounted Ford V8 behind the passenger compartment, accessed by a pair of gullwing doors. In North American specification, the model utilized a 5.0 liter (302ci) V8; more than enough for such a lightweight vehicle.

In addition, the Mangusta’s suspension is fully independent and features four-corner disc brakes and especially responsive steering courtesy of a rack-and-pinion steering gear - according to some period publications, the factory offered to set up each car according to their first owner's wishes, though not everyone took them up on it. Inside, a fully leather-lined interior with extensive instrumentation adds to the race car-like feel. In its time, the Mangusta offered supercar-level performance with incredibly stylish Italian flair. It is no wonder why examples are highly sought-after by collectors today. With only 401 built until 1971 and only around 250 known to remain in working order, any Mangusta is a sensational addition to any collection.

Displayed in its original factory color combination of Red over Black leather, this exceptional 1970 De Tomaso Mangusta Coupe was first owned by a Pan-Am pilot, who held the car for fourteen years. Two short-term owners used the car sparingly, after which it was sold to a noted collector in California who commissioned a complete restoration, which included a bare metal repaint, by Hall Pantera. While the work was being done, high-performance Ford specialists Hawaii Racing in L.A. rebuilt and re-assembled the motor using the best parts and materials available. According to a letter from a prevoius owner, the rebuilt motor is said to produce as much as 305hp.

Following its restoration, the Mangusta has enjoyed a series of meticulous owners who have ensured it remains in fabulous condition. As expected from such care, this stunning De Tomaso drives and presents wonderfully, having only traveled 63,704 miles from new. Accompanying this investment-grade Mangusta are its owner’s manual, tools, restoration/service receipts, and model literature. We are proud to offer this exceptional 1970 Mangusta to the most discerning collector, investor, or enthusiast who appreciates this legendary model.
