For Sale: 1986 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

6499 1986 Ford Mustang SVO

"Ford has certainly gotten the SVO's looks right, and its performance is truly potent. It's the hottest car in this test by far. Fire it down a test track and you'll see 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, a top speed of 129 mph, and a 0.79g cornering limit. The SVO also handles itself well on both highways and byways. It likes to be driven briskly on meandering roads. The steering feels direct and sure when you bend into corners. The ride is taut but not too tight. The fat steering wheel feels good, and the short throw shifter is racer sharp." Thx to Car and Driver, May 1985

For consignment, a 1986 Ford Mustang SVO with a title verified 11,020 actual miles. No, we did not leave off a "1". This very original example received a new paint job about a year ago and it's got tires that are less than 2 years old, so your maintenance costs will be minimal once you get this one in your garage. The SVO was a special Mustang produced for only three years and their unique cosmetic and performance modifications, love them or hate them, are legendary and the reason collectability is rising.

Exterior
Two stage Black paint adds to the bad boy attitude of this foxbody which has flush mounted headlights introduced mid year 1985, inspired by the aero styled 1984 Mark VII. And there, perched on the hood, is the feature that separates this Mustang from all other Mustangs, the SVO turbo scoop, offset to the left and beautifully sculpted into the hood. So iconic is the scoop, that a close twin showed up later in the Ferrari 575. Black trim pieces work well with the paint including the side mirrors, the double wing, and the accent lines through the taillights. Special 16-inch wheels were designed for the SVO and aside from some curb rash on one, they look great and wear tires with a manufacture date of mid 2022. Angle cut polished exhaust tips split wide and are visible from the side and of course, the back and the only other shiny metal on the car is the SVO badge on the fender. Imperfections include the rear spats, specific to the SVO near the wheel openings, are loose and crow's foot cracking in the paint on the rocker panel along with some chips in the paint.

Interior
Charcoal and gray is the palette used on the interior and it starts with a triple panel door card with varying materials in a linear, geometric pattern. The two tone seats are supportive buckets in front and flat, broad patterned seats in the rear, all in minty condition. An SVO embossed steering wheel is leather wrapped and leads to a rather simple gauge cluster of six readouts with bright red needles on black faced dials. Epically 80's, the AM/FM/Cassette radio is toward the center in the dash but slightly offset while the fog lamp switch, fuel selector, and digital clock are in an asymmetrical housing that flows onto the center console. It is there we find the tall shifter with a leather wrapped handle and boot. Low pile gray carpet covers the floor in the footwells and the back hatch area and is clean. The headliner around the sunroof is also in great shape.

Drivetrain
A 2.3 liter EFI 4 cylinder engine is clean under the hood and is turbocharged and intercooled with an air to air unit. SVO's were equipped with the Borg Warner T5 5-speed manual transmissions and were rated at 200 horsepower with those ponies heading to the Ford 7.5 inch rear, 3.73 gears, and TracLoc. Power disc brakes are front and rear and the rears were ventilated on the SVO.

Undercarriage
There's considerable surface rust underneath especially on the exhaust which enters the cat with one pipe, then splits to meet the original equipment mufflers before terminating at the exhaust tips. The driveshaft is also colored by rust and perhaps a bit pitted as well. There's a bit of road spray on the gas tank but everything else is generally clean. We note a drop of oil on the oil pan but not in any other place. Suspension consists of coil springs in the front and a 4 link with coil springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
The four cylinder is rather mild mannered when not in boost and SVO's were known for a bit of turbo lag which is present but not extreme during our subdued drive around the loop. It's a very clean interior from which to pilot this special car which tracks and brakes well. Two things of note, the A/C is not working and the horn relay clicks but no sound is generated. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

In three years, Ford produced less than 10,000 Mustang SVO's, so seeing one in the wild is a pretty rare occurrence, generally reserved for car shows. Here's one with mileage as low as you're likely to find. The styling cues alone are worth collecting, then take into account the unique drivetrain and other mechanical anomalies this car possesses, and you'll understand why the SVO is one to watch. We've been watching and the values are headed in the right direction. All you have to do is head to the mall. Emails and calls are also accepted!
