Vehicle Description
Full of character and fun accessories, this handsome 1950 Plymouth
Special Deluxe is an enjoyable cruiser that is simple to drive and
maintain without breaking your bank account. This black beauty has
a retro-cool "Support Your Local Moonshiners & Bootleggers" painted
in red on the front door, a windshield visor, cat-eye headlight
covers, door handle guards, window rain visors, high-mounted side
"peep" mirrors, fender skirts and red painted wheels wrapped with
Firestone 670-15 wide whitewall tires that look great against the
black color of the body. Inside, the roomy patinaed interior has
room to take the whole family cruising and features a beautiful
original dash design, serape blankets on the seats, a stoplight
peeper on the dash, and an accessory rear window blind. The
technology of the Plymouth engine and chassis was prewar stuff, but
it was the best of the prewar stuff. The 97-hp, 218-cu.in. A
straight-six engine is simple, rugged, and reliable. It provides
acceleration that is far from earth-shattering but adequate in
almost all circumstances. It is undoubtedly perfect for ice cream
or Sunday drives, the only work many old cars are tasked with
today.
The chassis is equally well designed with a coil-sprung independent
front suspension, "Sea-Leg" tubular shock absorbers, an open
driveshaft (albeit with trunnions rather than modern U-joints), and
"Safe-Guard" four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes that are certainly
capable enough for the stock engine. Handling won't have you out
front at the autocross track, but it's worth noting that Plymouth
had some NASCAR success in those days.
