Key Highlights
Year: 1979
Model: Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Restoration: Completed in 2005, including a full engine overhaul
and mechanical upgrades
Documentation: Original build sheet and comprehensive restoration
records
Condition: Fully restored from top to bottom, blending aesthetic
appeal with robust performance
Exterior Condition
Paint and Body: The car sports a fantastic silver metallic paint
job with no signs of rust on the body. The restoration was
professionally done, resulting in a deep, beautiful shine. Minor
blemishes include normal rock chips on the front valence and some
touch-ups on a fender and door. Overall, the body panels, including
the lower edges, are bone dry and clean.
Trim and Hardware: Plastics, trim, glass, lights, and hardware all
show very nicely. The aftermarket cowl induction adds a sharp look,
and the Torq Thrust II wheels are in excellent condition, wrapped
in Cooper Zeon tires with over 75% tread remaining.
Striping and Details: The stripe kit complements the silver paint
beautifully, and the car's overall appearance is enhanced by its
clean and consistent detailing.
Interior Condition
Seats and Carpeting: The largely original interior is clean and
well-maintained. Seats are in excellent condition, and new carpets
tie everything together.
Headliner and Dash: The headliner is in great shape, taut and
intact. The dash top is also in good condition, although the
instrument cluster faceplate is cracked and could benefit from
replacement. Gauges function as they should.
Upgrades and Features: The B&M Ratchet Megashifter is a stylish
upgrade, along with a custom steering wheel and chrome tilt column
cowl. The car originally had AC, but the unit has been removed,
although the heater core is functional. The stereo system has been
upgraded to a screen-style head unit with Bluetooth, and it sounds
great with a single speaker box in the trunk.
Overall Condition: No odors or signs of smoking. The trunk area is
solid and straight, and all door gaskets, trim, and hardware are in
good working order.
Engine and Mechanical
Engine: Original matching-numbers 5.7L 350 V8, fully rebuilt in
2005 with recent head service (2024). The engine bay is tidy, with
polished parts and chrome throughout. The V8 is mated to a TH350
Automatic 3-speed transmission, and power is delivered through an
Auburn limited-slip differential.
Performance: The car sounds incredible at idle and under power,
thanks to headers and a true dual exhaust. It features power
steering and power brakes (front disc and rear drums). The 4bbl
Holley carburetor ensures smooth fuel and air delivery.
Cooling and Reliability: Runs cool with a smooth, low idle.
Underside
Condition: The underside is exceptionally clean with no signs of
prior repairs. The frame is straight, and all brake lines and
suspension bushings are in great shape. Shocks are newer,
reflecting the thorough restoration.
Maintenance: Recently changed oil and ready for both road trips and
car shows.
Driving Experience
Performance: Delivers impressive power with a stall converter that
provides firm, satisfying shifts. The car is fun to drive, with
responsive handling and firm brakes that stop the car straight and
confidently.
Functionality: All lights, signals, and wipers function properly.
The car would benefit from an alignment, as it shows slight
wandering under heavy acceleration, likely due to toe-out
alignment.
Conclusion
This 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is an outstanding example of a
classic muscle car, combining extensive documentation and a
high-quality restoration. It's a valuable collector's item that
performs excellently on the road. Whether for shows or regular
driving, this Z28 is an excellent choice.
