Park Ward was solely responsible for the Continental Drop Head
Coupe. Crewe commissioned freelance designer Vilhelm Koren for the
concept. Vilhelm Koren drew up a new face for the third-generation
S-type Continental. The S3 Continental fixed head and drophead
coupes were a more tailored version of Koren's previous S2 design.
The Continental are well-known for their striking angled
headlamps.
This S3 Continental has an extremely well-known history with
previous enthusiast ownerships. An extremely rare original
left-hand-drive model, it was originally ordered and delivered with
the following options: Power-operated hood, Koln Blue Spot radio
with Radiomobile electric aerial, power windows and Sundym
glass.
This S3 Continental was originally delivered to the United States
and first owner, Mrs. Bertha Wilkes of Fort Worth, Texas. According
to the Rolls Royce Owners Club a future enthusiast owner was, Mr.
Rod Taylor, the American film star known for his appearances in The
Time Machine, The Birds, and other classic motion pictures. It was
then acquired in late-1985 by Mr. Steven Kay of Los Angeles,
California. Mr. Kay, a Rolls Royce Owner Club member exhibited this
Continental in several regional concours as well as the 1987
Rolls-Royce Owners' Club National Meet, receiving 3rd place in the
Bentley S class.
This Continental then made its way across the Atlantic to long term
South of France enthusiast ownership. One can only imagine the
grace at which this DHC adorned to sea shore roads of the Cote
d'Azur. Serviced when and where needed, and used sparingly in
season, this Continental S3 DHC is superb and with only the
slightest wear since restoration. Superbly restored and beautifully
kept, this iconic Bentley grand touring convertible.
