For Sale: 1967 Chrysler Imperial in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1967 Chrysler Imperial Crown 4 Door Sedan

"The new Imperial is a highly versatile automobile - as witnessed by this new Crown four door hardtop. At first the front seat of the Imperial four door hardtops appears to be a wide sectional couch. But at your command, it becomes individually adjusted twin armchairs, (power! If you prefer!). Imperial '67. Your personal automobile. Next year other luxury cars will be a little better because of it." From the lofty but accurate 1967 sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1967 Chrysler Imperial Crown 4 door hardtop with a title verified 68,787 actual miles, power windows, power wing windows, and unlike the split bench of the brochure car, this one has a power bench seat. Imperials are endlessly interesting cars and changes made to 1967 did not diminish their uniqueness.

Exterior
With this 1967 we see a car evolving, becoming more strait laced and stately, and in Formal Black paint, even more so. Less angular and ornate now, the very vertical posture is defined by a flat front fascia, a flat back, and B and C pillars that are upright and tall. Twin headlighting, uncovered and with their own chrome rings flank an Imperial blazoned grille that has many tiny grids, hugged by protruding marker light at a time when pointy, protruding fender ends were the trend. Things protrude out back too, in this case long vertical chrome tips reminiscent of Cadillac taillights, without the lights. In between, a stunning grille over the long horizontal tail lights extending end to end interrupted briefly by the Imperial eagle medallion at the decklid seam. Correct hubcaps fit over the 15-inch wheels, the rears somewhat obscured by fender skirts, another period design penchant. Overall, the paint and brightwork are in very good shape, with a few scratches noted around the lower door skin.

Interior
Though thinned out a bit, Imperials of this era have thick doors with robust features and an overall feeling of quality. Toggle switches and actuators are metal while the embossed green vinyl adds a touch of class along with faux wood panels and carpeted lowers. The light green stitched cloth inserts on the dark green vinyl bench seat provide some contrast and include the Imperial eagle embossed on the sides and a pulldown center armrest big enough for driver and passenger to use simultaneously. The seat shows some usage and also has a scratch in the vinyl while the back bench might look like fun but appears to have never been used. Bright green translucent plastic rings the steering wheel which also has wood trim around the horn buttons. A brushed aluminum column leads to the shifter in front of the faux wood backed dashboard and in keeping with the square theme of the car, presents gauges in rectangular bezels with barrel style readouts and a sweeping speedometer. In the center, simple climate controls are over the hidden radio. Lift the woodgrain door and we find the radio missing but a plate ready to accept one. Low pile green carpet looks good and the visors and headliner are in excellent condition, as is the huge, flat trunk.

Drivetrain
We hoist the large hood up to find a driver quality engine bay housing the 440ci V8, equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 350 horsepower. An A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic lives under the hump and sends power down the driveshaft to the 8" rear with 2.94 gears and Suregrip. Power disc brakes live up front and power drums are mounted out back.

Undercarriage
Surface rust exists on the usual places, driveshaft, leaf springs, exhaust, rear axle, rear shocks, frame rails. The front is dry, but the rear diff has oil possibly from the pinion seal. Single exhaust runs back to a stock style muffler and then terminates at the tailpipe under the car. Our Imperial is equipped with torsion bar suspension in front and leaf springs out back.

Drive-Ability
We roll this stately beast onto the tarmac and cruise a big circle. It is a floaty, comfortable ride with lots of visibility through tall windows. Meanwhile, we have a lot of buttons and toggles to test and here's what we find in the not perfect department. Oil pressure is reading low, the left turn signal is not working, same with the heater blower, and the headlight switch is wonky and if pushed too far, will not turn on. Sounds like a relationship I was in once.

Styling and design make Imperials unique, but they also make them quintessentially 1960's with some of the best quirks in the automotive world at that time. By 1967 they toned down the quirkiness but retained a lot of regalness of the cars. Our big black luxurious brick shaped car is destined to find a new caretaker who will enjoy every smooth cruising moment.
