The fifth generation of Chevrolet's venerable Corvette was unveiled to the public on January 6th, 1997 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI. This all-new Corvette represented a complete redesign of the Corvette with no parts carry over from the C4 Corvette unlike previous new Corvettes that had carried over old drivetrains from the preceding model. Designed as a convertible from the outset, the fifth generation was four and a half times stiffer than the C4 and needed no additional bracing or structures to go topless. This was due to a new backbone chassis that added torsional stiffness along with a hydroformed steel frame. To improve handling and weight distribution, the transmission was relocated from behind the engine to the rear of the chassis where it was bolted to the rear axle itself and connected to the engine with an aluminum torque tube. This gave the C5 a perfect 50/50 front to rear balance and excellent handling characteristics. The new LS1 5.7L all aluminum V-8 also debuted with the C5 Corvette, and in this application produced 345hp and 350 lb. ft. of torque. Shifting duties were handled by either the standard GM 4L60E electronically controlled four speed automatic, or the optional Borg-Warner T-56 6-speed manual transmission. The convertible model was introduced for model year 1998 with a manual folding cloth top that was stowed beneath a tonneau cover for a clean look when the top was down. Motor Trend magazine named the Chevrolet Corvette it's Car of the Year for 1998, and sales of the Corvette exploded from just 9,752 in 97' to over 31,000 in 1998.
