For Sale: 1950 Ford Custom in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1950 Ford Custom 4 Door Sedan

Less than an hour from Morgantown, Chester Pennsylvania was home to one of Ford's assembly plants from 1927 to 1961. The 50 acre facility first produced Model A's and a rail line came through and awning at the building which is still a standing structure at 500 West Front Street along the Delaware River. Among other cars that were assembled there were 1950 Ford Customs.

For consignment, a 1950 Ford Custom 4 door sedan, born in nearby Chester, Pennsylvania. Of the 900+ cars we have at Classic Auto Mall, not every one is a pristine show car and this Ford offers a solid opportunity for restoration or customization. It's a diamond in the rough with plenty of patina but as they say, "good bones".

Exterior
The original single stage black paint appears to be original and exposed to elements for a time with exposed surface rust on the horizontal surfaces in patterns customizers try to emulate for the current patina trend. In fact, you could clear coat the rough paint on this car and have a car that's in vogue and admired for authentic wear. The 1950 Ford has a wonderfully round body and everything from the hood to the roof to the rear is curvaceous and plump and the only right angles you'll find are on the windows. A big chrome bumper and fat grille combine decent chrome with components that exhibit some rust. The hood ornament is pitted, and the plastic crest is appropriately marred with crackling. 16-inch wheels sport Ford hubcaps and the white wall overlays on some wheels is actually peeling off from age. All glass and lenses are in place and the A-pillars wear wind deflectors we've rarely seen. Overall, the paint is rough but the body lacks any heavy invasive rust that we could find and is relatively straight.

Interior
Patina finds its way inside as the door panels are stained but mostly intact with one showing tears and heavy staining. The turquoise bench seat covers in front have a plaid insert and both the vinyl outer parts and the insert are torn or disintegrated and will need to be recovered or replaced. In the rear, the bench is in better shape, of course, but has yellowed over time. Underneath both seat covers, the original beige might be worth investigating. Cracked and missing paint, the steering wheel is tired but authentically worn, the gold center cap holding on to a semblance of splendor. A single gauge is sculpted into the metal dashboard and a clock is found in the center over the original AM radio and all its vintage appeal. The floor is covered with a rubberized mat front and rear in lieu of carpet and appears solid while the cloth headliner has discolored over time to a drab brown patina.

Drivetrain
Surface rust covers the 226ci inline 6 cylinder that is rated at 95 horsepower and is fed fuel by a 1-barrel carburetor. Three on the tree indicates a 3-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels and 3.73 gears. Drum brakes are fitted behind each wheel. The inner fender wells and firewall also have patina and surface rust to match the heads and engine components.

Undercarriage
As expected, plenty of advanced surface rust underneath including the single exhaust which picks up a Cherrybomb muffler on its way to the back. There's a solid coating of oil, let's call it grease and grime, on the engine, suspension and steering components as well as some oil sling near both U-joints. Surface rust colors the frame rails and for suspension, we have coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
Don't judge a book by its cover they say and according to our consignor this car runs and drives well. We did not take the chance of starting the car after seeing the condition of the fuel in the fuel bowl.

Some TLC will be in order before and driving is to be done. This rounded, upright car is exemplary for the post war era and a wonderful starting point for a project. Restore to original, restomod it, Rat Rod it, or simply cover it with a clear coat and call it a day and you'll have a great car, once an American family staple.
