Vehicle Description
Ahrens-Fox can trace its roots back to a company called Latta that
built a steam-powered fire engine in Cincinnati in 1852. Chris
Ahrens was an apprentice at Latta at the time and would eventually
assume ownership before merging with American LaFrance in 1903.
Ahrens, his son-in-law Charles Fox and several other family members
then left to form what became Ahrens-Fox in 1910. Ahrens-Fox
quickly gained a sterling reputation for its fire apparatus and
boasted that it built nearly every part of them at the factory in
Cincinnati, even the giant engines. Ahrens-Fox also built very fine
horse-drawn fire apparatus, but after 1912 it focused exclusively
on vehicles with engines. Often considered the Cadillac of fire
apparatus, the Ahrens-Fox is instantly recognizable and highly
respected for its innovation and high quality. This 1930 Ahrens-Fox
Model V Fire Engine originally served with the Falmouth,
Massachusetts Fire Department for many years. Subsequently, it was
acquired by an enthusiast who commissioned a meticulous body-off
restoration to its original specifications, completed in 2013. The
restoration, done to a very high standard and with authenticity in
mind, included Ahrens-Fox #1 red lacquer paint, 23-karat gold leaf
lettering, green trim, all new oak wood replacing the original,
running boards and tail board covered in green battleship linoleum,
new windshield glass and rubber molding, and reupholstered black
leather bench seating. Although the drivetrain had less than 10,000
original miles, it underwent a full inspection and necessary
repairs. As part of the restoration, the Ahrens-Fox's brake system
was completely rebuilt, including the vacuum assist, new brake
shoes, and wheel cylinders. It was also fitted with 700x20 tires,
tubes, and flaps, as well as all new electrical wires, including
the magneto and distributor. Lavishly and properly equipped, it
boasts period-correct hoses, an Akron Brass nozzle, a wooden axe,
ladder, siren, spotlight, American Rubber MFG. suction hoses, a
Champion brass and copper fire extinguisher, bell, 500-gpm gear
pump, and an AF pike pole. Powered by a 428.4 cubic inch YXC-3
Hercules straight-six engine coupled to a Fuller four-speed
transmission, this fully equipped fire truck has a commanding
presence yet is compact enough to fit into a normal garage space.
This Ahrens-Fox is the cream of the crop when it comes to vintage
fire vehicles. While many old fire trucks receive average quality
restorations, this one has received the exquisite, top-notch
concours restoration it deserves. Offers welcome and trades
