1966 Oldsmobile 442 Hardtop
One of only 2,129 Oldsmobile 442s produced in model year 1966
factory equipped with the L69 Performance Package, this gorgeous
red example was treated to a frame-off restoration. Powered by a
matching-numbers drivetrain, this 1960s-era muscle car checks all
the boxes: a 400 CI Tri-Power V-8 rebuilt and super-tuned to
Modello specs, M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and a
Code G80 Positraction rear end. The exterior is finished in red and
the 442 is fitted with the correct Code P05 chrome super stock
styled steel wheels mounting redline radial tires. The black bucket
seat interior features a center console with its protruding chrome
transmission linkage with the embossed shift pattern on the knob, a
Code U16 factory tachometer, black two-spoke steering wheel and a
radio.
Made exclusively in 1969, the Code L69 Performance Package
consisted of a triple 2-barrel carburetion setup-three Rochester
2GC carburetors mounted on a special low-rise intake manifold-that
was activated mechanically through a progressive linkage. The
engine was also equipped with an aggressive camshaft profile, a
higher compression ratio and a low-restriction dual exhaust system.
The engine produced 360 HP and made 440 lb-ft of torque.
That combination of horsepower and torque gave the L69-equipped
Oldsmobile 442 a starting line advantage on the drag strip. Car
Life magazine tested the L69 442 in 1966 and recorded a 0-60 MPH
time of just 6.3 seconds and a quarter mile speed of 97 MPH with a
14.8-second elapsed time. The Oldsmobile 442 was also an
excellent-handling muscle car with its high-rate springs and front
and rear anti-sway bars. Sold new at Holiday Oldsmobile in San
Bernardino, California, this car is accompanied by restoration
photos, the original car shipper order invoice, an original
California pink slip dated to 1976 and an original 1966 Oldsmobile
color brochure.
