Although the American performance car was virtually extinct by 1975, Pontiac’s Firebird Trans Am actually enjoyed growing popularity, thanks to powerful engines, outstanding handling, and bold styling. Strong street performance and innumerable racing victories solidified the growing Trans Am legend, which reached a fever pitch in 1977 with the Trans Am’s unforgettable starring role in the smash hit movie, Smokey and the Bandit.
Unforgettably finished in brilliant Red paint with the iconic Screaming Eagle hood decal and Trans Am graphics, this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was built in March 1979 at GM’s Norwood, Ohio F-Body assembly plant. In addition to removable T-roof panels, the Trans Am is accented by “Snowflake” aluminum wheels and chrome twin-tip exhaust outlets. The highly original interior features optional Camel Tan Hobnail cloth upholstery, plus a large-diameter tachometer and gauges, heat/defrost, a rear defogger, a standard center console, and a modern Panasonic digital AM/FM CD stereo head unit. Added speakers reside to each side of the floor console.
Power is delivered by a retrofitted Pontiac 455 CI V-8 engine, paired with a console-shifted automatic transmission. All Trans Ams left the factory for 1979 with the rear-facing “Shaker” air scoop blocked off; however, this example breathes fresh air, thanks to opening of the scoop. While a factory A/C car, the compressor has been removed. A space-saver spare tire and roadside jack are included. Very attractive throughout, this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is ready to cruise, show, and enjoy. Appraised value of $55,000 CAD. Canadian tax is not applicable.
