For Sale: 1968 AMC AMX in Watford, Ontario

Vehicle Description

Derived from the new-for-1968 Javelin and featuring a shortened wheelbase and seating for just two, American Motors’ AMX (American Motors Experimental) coupe debuted in February 1968 at Daytona International Speedway and then at the Chicago Automobile Show as a mid-year model. Designed by famed stylist “Dick” Teague, the AMX remains famous as the first steel-bodied, two-seat American production car since the original 1955-57 Ford Thunderbird. At Goodyear’s Texas test track, Land Speed record racer Craig Breedlove set 106 world records with an AMX. Available AMX powerplants included 290, 343 and 390 cubic-inch V-8 engines with outputs ranging from 225 bhp to 315 bhp. Standard AMX features included reclining bucket seats, carpeting, wood grain interior trimmings, E70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires, a four-speed manual transmission (automatic optional), and heavy-duty suspension. The ‘GO’ package added more performance, interior, and appearance features to the AMX. Only 6,725 examples of the AMX were built for the inaugural 1968 model year. After the first 550 cars were assembled in 1967, each AMX built during 1968 was fitted with a dash plaque and a unique production number, highlighting each AMX’s special status. Numbered 05286, this 1968 American Motors AMX is listed in the Classic AMX Registry, which states the car was owned in Napa, California from early 1983 to 2023, including a restation in 2013. Colors are Body Tag-correct, including the Code 39A Matador Red paint and Trim Code 835A Red Ventilear interior upholstery including reclining bucket seats. In addition to the 315-horsepower 390 cubic-inch AMC V-8 engine, AMX 05286 is equipped with the optional FO Package, automatic transmission and a 3.54:1 Twin-Grip differential, plus an AM/FM radio, Adjust-O-Tilt steering column, Handling Package, power front disc/rear drum brakes, heavy-Duty engine cooling, seat headrests, power steering, dual exhaust, and chrome steel mag-style wheels. An electric fuel pump and Holley Sniper electronic throttle-body fuel injection system are very desirable upgrades enhancing drivability and ease of operation. A highly collectible AMX from the inaugural model year that continues to benefit from a high-quality restoration that is faithful to its factory specifications, this 1968 American Motors AMX is an exciting find and ready to show and enjoy. Appraised value of $95,000 CAD. Canadian tax is not applicable.
