For Sale: 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 in Fenton, Missouri

Vehicle Description

This is a stunning example of a rare 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 "G" CODE 406/405HP Tri Power four speed convertible. This 62 Galaxie 500 was the recent recipient of a comprehensive frame-off restoration by "Mr. Galaxie," Donald Allen, whose shop in Clarksville, Georgia, is famous for its award-winning restorations of Galaxies. Jacky Jones assisted in the restoration with Donald Allen and arguably there are no two people that know Ford performance cars like they do.

In early 1962, Ford was the only low-priced marque that didn't offer an engine larger than 400 cubic inches. Compared to the 421-cube Pontiacs, 413 Plymouths and Dodges that were the size of Ford's own midsize Fairlanes, and even the 409 Chevys, Ford's largest offering was 390 cubes. Never mind that the six-barrel "Thunderbird Special" 390 was rated at 401 gross ponies-well above the marketing-magic one-horsepower-per-cubic-inch.

For 1962, Ford launched its 406-cubic-inch V-8 as a racing homologation special; it used the 390's 3.785-inch stroke, but bored things out .080, to 4.13 inches. Two versions were available: the four-barrel version offering 385 horsepower, and the tri-power variant was rated at 405 horsepower. Both variants featured 11.4:1 compression, cast headers, and a low-restriction dual exhaust.

Any 406-powered Galaxie required a Borg-Warner T10 four-speed transmission, 15-inch wheels, heavy-duty suspension, four-wheel drum brakes, and a high-capacity radiator. A new 3-inch-wide driveshaft was part of the package, as was a new-for-1962 rear axle, sporting a 9-inch ring and pinion.

Best of all, it took a keen eye to spot the engine callout, displayed on a fender badge. That was the Galaxie's tell: If you knew where to look, you would know instantly whether the car pulling up to the light was Grandma's 352-powered snoozemobile, or whether you were going to have a situation on your hands when the light turned green. Many were surprised.

Finished in the correct Chestnut Metallic and Chestnut Crush vinyl interior, this color combination is absolutely striking. The paint is like looking into a mirror and the body is laser straight. All of the chrome trim and bright work is fantastic and glistens in the sun. The engine compartment has the wow factor and the under carriage is amazing. This is a very strong running car that drives great and demands attention wherever it goes. Call 314-346-6039 with questions or to purchase. 314-346-6039
