1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL: A Timeless Legacy of Care
Let’s step into the garage of memories, where the 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL stands—a classic that has weathered the years with grace. This isn’t just a car; it’s a bridge between generations, a tangible link to the past.
Under the Hood
Engine: The original 390 4-barrel V8 engine hums with familiarity. At 100,000 miles, it received a second chance—a rebuild that breathed new life into its pistons. My father and his crew of professional mechanics, turned wrenches, ensuring this heart would beat for decades.
Dual Exhaust: The dual exhaust system, helps create that unmistakable sound of the 66 Ford. If you know, you can relate. Like an old friend passing by… Classic car lovers attach photographs of their memories to those exhaust sounds.
Power Steering: Imagine the ease as you navigate—power steering, a quiet companion, guiding you through life’s twists and turns. Wonderful to have in the older classics.
Air Conditioning: On sweltering days, the A/C offers solace. It’s not just cool air; it’s a respite from the heat of time. Nice to have in addition to those little angled windows for airflow.
Brake Drums: Four wheels, four drum brakes.
Originality Preserved
Exterior: The original red paint wears its age proudly and is rust-free. It’s the same eye-catching red color that caught my father’s attention, (more likely my mother’s influence), when he purchased new. The black top, repainted two decades ago, adds a touch of contrast and nostalgia—a memory etched in pigment.
Mileage: 103,014 original miles—a testament to measured journeys. Garaged in a climate-controlled cocoon, it awaits its next adventure.
A Family Tale
Ownership History: My father was the original owner. The car became part of my family’s most prized items, (set aside for only my mother to drive), not driven in the winters and always garaged. The car was the little gem that got the spoiled treatment. Our family owned a gas and service station, so any maintenance or engine repairs were done on routine and thoroughly. Oil changes, tune ups, washes, and waxing—a labor of love. As a young boy, I always kept the car and its chrome shining and the interior spotless.
Parades and Pleasure Cruises: The car was a favorite in parades, its flashy red and chrome gleamed proudly offering display of state and local politicians, sports heroes and prom kings and queens. It cruised through life, a loyal companion. Its home has always been in the Black Hills.
Details Matter
Interior: Red leather seats cradle passengers, each crease a story. The seats are in excellent condition with a small cut in the driver’s seat. (Mechanic error sat down with tool in back pocket about 23 years ago). The owner’s manual is kept in the glovebox.
