For Sale: 1972 Pontiac GTO in Traverse City, Michigan

Vehicle Description

1972 Lemans ordered with W62 GTO option, 5,807 were made. Also ordered with WW5 option. Only 290 of these WW5 GTO’s were built and this package was only available in 1972. There is a list of all the items that are part of the WW5 package among the photos. Original color was starlight black. When the car was only a year old it was repainted Monarch yellow which was an optional color in 1972. The car was completely disassembled in 2005 and refurbishment was performed in a rotisserie from 2005 to 2007. The owners decided to stay with the Monarch yellow in honor of a family member who owned the car back in the early 70’s. It was acquired by the previous owner in 2021. Subsequent work included rebuilding the engine, transmission, and limited-slip differential as well as replacing the shocks, coil springs, axles, pressure plate, flywheel, clutch, wiring harnesses and carpets. The 455ci 4 bolt main HO V8 is said to have been bored 0.030” over and rebuilt with an Eagle forged rotating assembly and replacement valve train components. The exhaust system is fitted with replacement manifolds and Flowmaster mufflers. The transmission was rebuilt with replacement gears, synchronizer assemblies, and main bearings along with a Centerforce dual friction clutch and a steel flywheel. The 12-bolt limited-slip differential is said to have been rebuilt with 3.55:1 Richmond Gears. Also rebuilt at that time was the brake master cylinder, tilt steering column, and electric driver’s seat. Cost of the parts for rebuilding everything was just under $ 19,000. All the rebuild work was done by the previous owner who was a mechanic at Boeing for 30 years. He is a super nice man and is very knowledgeable about Pontiacs. He is willing to talk to anyone who has questions about his work on the car. After he got the car all back together a family situation arose that nessitated the sale of the Lemans. Pictures of the restoration of the chassis and frame plus  engine and transmission rebuild pictures can be seen @ 1972 yellow GTO in Utah, also photos of documentation of the car and restoration receipts. If you hold a mirror up to the picture in this ad of the upside down and backwards VIN number, it will reflect the image back correctly. This number is located behind the left rear wheel on top of the frame. Can be seen only with a mirror. The carburetor that was on the car when he bought it ( in 2021), was the correct 800 CFM carb for a 72 H.O. 455 automatic which has a vacuum port for the trans. He was able to locate and purchase for $ 2,900, the correct 800 CFM Rochester 4bbl carb for a 72 H.O. 455 4 speed car, which does not have a transmission vacuum port. He cleaned and rebuilt the carb which functions well. Step on the gas to set choke and fast idle, tap the pedal for normal idle. Starts like a new car. Vehicle is all numbers matching. Wheels are date coded 2 weeks prior to the production date of the car which is supposed to be the correct order of timing on the assembly line. Tires are the right specification ( G 60-15 ) Goodyear Polyglas. This is what one person said about the car in the comment section @ 1972 yellow GTO in Utah. “I finally got through all the photos and the transformation from before, to it’s current condition, is phenomenal…no stone was unturned! This is one of the nicest restorations of a 72 455-HO GTO, bar none and all numbers matching! I noticed on the build sheet that it shows the unitized ignition and the last picture shows it, but maybe it doesn’t work. It also shows that it was ordered with custom paint Starlight Black, but the front bumper to be Code 11 White, which is odd and rare.”                                                                                                                                                             Doors open and close like new, windows roll up and down easily. Gorgeous car. Our home is located a mile from the highway on a dirt road. If the road is dusty or muddy I won’t take it out or if there is a chance of rain I won’t take the car out so I rarely get to drive it. If you look at the restoration photos on the other website you will see how nice the underside is. Needs a home on a paved road, It’s a rare and beautiful car. Does have some paint imperfections and a scratch on the passenger side glass. 231-218-3815  Please leave a message, will return your call. Thank You
