Vehicle Description
Ford and Carroll Shelby had already achieved success with the
track-focused GT350 Mustang, and in 1967 they unveiled a big-block
version called the GT500. By 1968, the Shelby Mustangs were
produced in Ford's own assembly plants, with this example having
been produced at Metuchen in New Jersey on January 30th, 1968.
Factory equipment for this GT500 Convertible includes Shoulder
Harnesses, Black Power Top, Extra Cooling Package, Wheel Lip
Moldings, Power Disc Brakes, Tilt-Away Steering Wheel, AM Radio,
and Interior Decor Group. Even with the comfort and convenience
features Ford added to the Shelby Mustangs, the GT500 is still a
serious high-performance car.
Power comes from the 428 cubic-inch "Police Interceptor" V8 that
was also used in other large Fords. This vehicle benefits from a
recent overhaul of its original engine and is presently equipped
with a new carburetor installed in 2021. Opted with the four-speed
manual transmission from new and a 3.50 rear-end, this GT500 is
satisfying to drive, and the clutch was replaced in 2020.
Externally, the GT500 features a fiberglass front and rear end,
functional hood scoops, and side air scoops. Finished in Wimbledon
White, this example appears to be wearing its original paint in
preserved condition with only minor signs of wear and age. Inside,
the Shelby cars borrow trim elements from the Mustang GT and
include amenities like power steering, and a functional rear seat.
The vehicle features original luxury bucket seats upholstered in
factory black vinyl. The interior of this GT500 has been well-kept
but does show some signs of age as it has never been restored.
Under the care of the same Southern California owner for over 50
years, this Shelby GT500 Convertible is a rare find among
collectible muscle. This exceptional example includes a Deluxe
Marti Report highlighting its intact original configuration, the
original invoice, and service records for the engine overhaul,
carburetor, and clutch replacement. The exterior paint has been
professionally polished delicately to preserve the finish, the
interior has been carefully detailed, and the engine bay has been
freshly dry-ice cleaned. Please note that the power top will need
to be serviced for full operation.
