Classic Car Addict is proud to present this 1978 Chevrolet Corvette
Official Pace Car edition for sale in our Mesa, Arizona showroom.
The 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Limited Edition Pace Car Replica
editions had a distinctive Black/Silver 2-tone paint with a red
pinstripe and that package added over $4300 to the price of the
car. Production of the pace car replica was limited to one for
every Chevrolet dealership and 6,502 pace cars built in 1978.
Chevrolet originally planned for the '78 pace car replicas to be a
special edition with a very small production number. They were
capitalizing on the fact that the Corvette was asked to pace that
year's Indy 500. They originally only planned for 300 units; but as
word got out, Chevy ramped up production. This was 46 years ago.
Some of the replicas were driven into the ground or left for rust
or completely sun faded.
Inside the cabin it's business as usual. The pace car replicas
didn't receive any special treatment inside like other Corvettes.
The silver seats were recently reupholstered. Our consignor states
that he believes the door panels and carpet are original to the
vehicle, including the 1978 speedometer that shows 140 MPH, tach,
and glovebox. Looking towards the center, you have additional
gauges for temp, fuel, clock, oil, and battery. The original
factory radio is in the trunk. Let's not forget the 25th
Anniversary limited Corvette badge just below the shift column that
will only be found on 1978 Corvettes. This Corvette also features
removable glass roof panels.
The most notable and unique aspects of the pace car replicas was
the paint scheme-black on silver. This was one of the only options
available in '78 that you could only get on a pace car replica. The
two-tone paint is comprised of black on the top half of the car
with silver on the bottom, separated by a thin red stripe. This one
has had a full repaint in the last 6 years.
The Corvette touts the CUT: 350 CUBIC INCH, 185 HORSEPOWER,
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, the 185-HP L48 small block 350. Feeding the
350ci small-block is the original Rochester four-barrel Quadrajet.
The AC was converted to R134a, but it does need service as the AC
does not blow cold. All lights (interior and exterior) are in
working order as well as the popup headlights. The Corvette rolls
on new Goodyear tires, P255/60R15's.
