Vehicle Description
Classic Car Addict is proud to present this convertible 1968
Volkswagen Beetle for sale in our Mesa, Arizona showroom. 1968 was
the year the name "Beetle" was given to the car. Volkswagen
referred to the car as the "Type 1" until the 1968 model year. In
Europe, it was marketed as the VW 1200/1300/1500 before adopting
the "Beetle" name given to it by the public.
1968 was the same year they introduced "Herbie". Disney's first
"Herbie" movie, The Love Bug, debuted in 1968. The plot features a
self-aware Beetle that is tied up in hijinks while also proving
itself a successful race car. Early autonomous technology enables
Herbie to motor about on its own, a feat that's slightly more
believable than the ease with which the 40-hp '63 Bug dispatches
competitors at the track.
A swing of the door and we see Royal Red metal painted surrounding
a black horizontally ribbed vinyl panel, complete with the door
handle window crank and a vinyl door pull. Dual textured vinyl
seats have smooth black vinyl bolsters and lots of clean black
piping. The rear seat is a long bench and stretches from C pillar
to C pillar. The carpeting has been removed from the floors, and
Coco protective mats have been installed to keep your feet from
slipping. An unmolested and simple black painted dash with circular
speedometer and square gas gauge sit within the vertical ribbed
speaker area which is fronted by an original steering wheel in
black with a chrome horn ring and the castle Wolfsburg logo in the
center. An AM/FM/CD radio is also mounted in the dash and is a
perfect fit. The black convertible top is in excellent
condition.
This cool little beetle has decently minded gaps and the paint
isn't perfect (it shows well) but you can see the imperfections in
the video. Rounded fenders in red frame the headlights with chromed
visors looking a lot like eyelashes for cars. The lenses for the
turn signals and taillights all present well with nice chrome
trimming which goes with the black rubber piping seen throughout
between the seams of the fenders and bodywork. The rest of the
chrome trimmings are present with badging is all correct
designation. Blackwall tires have shiny dog dish style wheel
coverings, and this adds to the black trim mystique.
A cleaned up but not original (AH412069) 1600cc horizontally
opposed 4-cylinder engine sits in the rear of this car. It has a
1-barrel carb on top, and a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine
appears well maintained, presents very cleanly and drives through
the 4-speed. It features a new fuel pump and a new T2 Bosch
distributor. She runs and drives great!
The convertible top works perfectly and you can cruise top down or
top up and get all the thumbs up! Don't miss out on owning this
