HISTORY OF THE TRIUMPH TR6
Regarded by many as the most appealing of the T-series Triumphs,
the TR6 debuted for the 1969 model year. Mechanically evolved from
the one-year-only TR5/TR250, the TR6 retained its predecessor's
chassis and drivetrain while benefiting from suspension refinements
and wider 15-inch wheels, giving the car a leaner stance and more
composed handling.
Power came from a 2.5-liter straight-six equipped with twin
Zenith-Stromberg carburetors in U.S.-specification, producing just
over 100 horsepower. A traditional wood dashboard, standard front
disc brakes, and options including Overdrive, chrome wire wheels,
and a removable hardtop made the TR6 highly customizable.
A delight to drive both then and now, the TR6 consistently ranks
high among iconic British sports cars. Its unmistakable styling and
lively character continue to appeal to discerning drivers and
collectors alike.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
The 1973 Triumph TR6 offered here spent nearly three decades with a
single enthusiast before joining the personal collection of IT'S
ALIVE! owner Jeff Homsher in 2016. Finished in its factory-correct
color combination of Sienna Brown over a New Tan interior, this TR6
combines long-term stewardship with tasteful period enhancements
and desirable factory options, including an overdrive gearbox and
chrome wire wheels. An OE-style Black Vinyl convertible top with
the correct reflective stripe completes the presentation. According
to the B-post commission tag, the car was assembled at Triumph's
Coventry works in April 1973 for export to the United States.
While the car's earliest history remains unknown, documented
ownership begins in 1987 when it was acquired by its longtime, St.
Louis-based, caretaker. During nearly 29 years of ownership, the
TR6 received several tasteful enthusiast upgrades, including a
bolt-in four-point roll bar and a handsome NARDI wood-rimmed
steering wheel. These additions give the car a subtly sporting
demeanor while remaining true to the character that has made the
TR6 one of Britain's most beloved roadsters.
Recognizing its honest presentation and desirable specification,
Jeff Homsher acquired the car for his personal collection in 2016.
The chrome wire wheels, Michelin X redline tires, luggage rack,
twin-pipe exhaust, and roll bar give the TR6 an unmistakable period
appearance, while never overshadowing its fundamentally original
character. Inside, the original seat upholstery, door panels, and
carpeting remain in place, reflecting the car's well-preserved
nature.
Under the bonnet is engine number CF7889UE, the appropriate serial
number for a 1973 U.S.-specification TR6 and, while undocumented,
is believed likely to be the original engine installed at the
factory. The engine compartment retains an impressively original
appearance, displaying numerous period-correct components,
including the correct green cooling hoses, new radiator air
ducting, and a new LUCAS washer bottle and mounting bracket.
Accompanying the car are its owner's manual, Triumph Sports Owners
Association handbook and supplements, a period-correct British
Leyland Service Passport, past insurance cards, and additional
documentation. Also included is an original BW convertible top boot
which, although its date code is no longer legible, is believed to
be original to the car based on its correct New Tan color and
period appearance.
The exterior was refinished to a high standard under prior
ownership and today exhibits the minor imperfections one would
expect from an older repaint. Even so, the finish remains glossy,
reflective, and presents very well, complementing the TR6's honest,
well-preserved character.
Since 2022, IT'S ALIVE! has serviced the TR6 extensively, including
replacement of the clutch hydraulics, engine oil and filter, fuel
tank sending unit, radiator shroud, wiper arms and blades,
windscreen washer bottle and bracket, rocker panel trim, and
rebuilding of the speedometer, among other maintenance items.
Today, the TR6 performs and presents wonderfully, with the
overdrive engaging quickly and smoothly. The five-digit odometer
currently displays 39,000 miles which, while certainly believable
given the car's overall condition, cannot be documented as
actual.
Combining nearly four decades of documented enthusiast ownership,
desirable factory options, tasteful period enhancements, extensive
recent servicing, and an honest, well-preserved presentation, this
Sienna Brown TR6 is ready to be enjoyed exactly as Triumph
intended.
