1931 Packard 840 Deluxe 8 Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton. Located near PORTLAND, OREGON.
While the Great Depression brought the luxury car business to its knees, it was during the early 1930s that some of the most luxurious automobiles were produced, in hopes that the few who had been able to hold on to their money would be lured to spend it at the sight of something spectacular. This 1931 Packard 840 Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton certainly fulfills the term "spectacular." With a body designed by the legendary Raymond Dietrich and produced in the Packard shops on their 142" Deluxe 8 chassis, this automobile beautifully strikes the perfect balance of luxury and sportiness. This was a very limited production model, with just 95 made (this being car #88) and 1 of just 8 known to survive today. Upon completion, this automobile was displayed at the Packard showroom on Park Avenue in New York. While considered a 1931 model (although Packard used the term "Series" for their model designations, rather than by year), this automobile did not find a buyer until May 4th of 1932. With a factory price of $4,500+ (10 times the price of a new Ford V8!), it was certainly a very special buyer. While the original owner is unknown, it obviously led a pampered life, likely as a summer-use car on a country estate.
This Packard has received a full off-the-frame restoration to concours level. Beautifully finished in correct "Aztec Olivine Brown" body with "Riverhead Green" fenders and beltline moldings, accented by a tan Haartz cloth canvas top; this Packard is a standout on the road and show field. All trim wears show-quality chrome plating, including the six wire wheels, which are wrapped by whitewall tires. Gorgeous saddle tan leather upholstery in new condition. Optioned with folding trunk rack; dual sidemounted spare wheels with chrome tread covers and mirrors; dual Pilot Ray driving lights that turn with the front wheels to light the road ahead, along with dual C.M. Hall adjustable spotlights mounted on both sides of the cowl. The rear compartment is covered by the second cowl, which is hinged to to fold up for easy access. Two spring-loaded pistons counterbalance the cowl and folding rear windshield. Rear compartment is finished to match the front in saddle tan leather. A storage compartment on the rear of the front seat holds a full set of side curtains for the car in new condition.

Mechanically excellent. Fully rebuilt original 385 cubic inch straight eight engine. 135 HP with LOTS of torque. Starts easily, runs smoothly and quietly. 4-speed transmission shifts crisply. Completely detailed under the hood and correct in all respects. I have personally driven this car and it is a real pleasure. Excellent power and acceleration. Holds the road well and stops quick and straight. Makes a statement and draws attention wherever you go. The epitome of Classic era Packard styling and quality, for touring or show, it truly is spectacular from every angle.
