Vehicle Description
1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
In 1966, 27,720 Corvettes were built and of them, 17,762 of them
were convertibles. 6,100 total cars were colored Nassau Blue and
7,591 of the total cars had 4-speed manual transmissions. As you
can see, Corvettes are some of the most well documented cars in
American history and have had an enthusiastic following since 1953.
The 1966 is among the favorites of the C2's, the second generation
of the model now in its eighth iteration.
For consignment, a numbers matching 1966 convertible that was
driven its first five years then essentially tucked away until it
was purchased and went through a 20 year restoration. Even the
frame was restored before reassembly of the pieces. Some will argue
that Nassau Blue is one of the best colors for a Corvette and while
we don't have a dog in that fight, we don't disagree. This car
shows an unverified 37,368 miles and comes with a factory hardtop
that is still in the consignor's possession.
Exterior
Bathed in a Nassau Blue respray, which is the original color, the
car is gleaming but not over restored. The chrome on the bumpers is
in great shape having been restored and the brightwork is in
matching condition. The convertible top is impeccable including the
plastic window. The side pipes and their fluted covers are not only
epic in design but spotless in execution. 15-inch five spoke chrome
wheel covers with faux knock offs occupy each corner. All the
emblems are in place and sparkling. The blue hue accentuates the
lines of the car, from the raised fender hips to the pointed detail
on the hood to the vented gills on the side. As the Tubes once
sang..."She's a beauty...she's one in a million girl....."
Interior
With its iconic double brow dash, which presents in great
condition, nice and clean, is the gauge cluster and center console,
all is looking very clean. It's all correct here, even the
vertically mounted AM/FM radio and chromed shifter. Buckets are
Bright Blue and are in nice condition with inner tuck and roll
stitched vinyl and smooth outer bolsters. The blue loop style
carpet is essentially flawless with no staining and is protected by
period, opaque plastic floor mats that are yellowed from time but
intact. More blue on the door panels which are in fantastic
condition with the exception of a small tear on the driver's side
armrest.
Drivetrain
All numbers matching here with the HT coded 327ci L79 V8 making
350hp. Topped by a correct single 4-barrel Holley carburetor, and
its original and numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual
transmission is on the back. An AN stamped rear axle assembly
weighs in at a 3.55 ratio with Positraction. The engine is showing
traces of its original orange/red block with a chrome air cleaner
atop, and original valve covers in nice form. All buttoned up and
looking great!
Undercarriage
A spectacularly clean underside, the result of a body-off
restoration. The frame is gloss black and the rear shocks and
transverse leaf springs painted silver/blue. This car sports disc
brakes on all 4 corners. Independent coil spring suspension is on
the front and an independent suspension is on the rear with tubular
shafts and a transverse multi-leaf spring. Dual exhaust feeds into
the side pipes.
Drive-Ability
These early 1960's C2 Vettes are just a blast to drive, and it made
me feel like an artist driving my handiwork with its sculpted
fiberglass body, and snappy interior. It lit right up, and the test
track beckoned. Performance is the buzzword for this car, and
thanks to the 350hp L79 mill it has nearly limitless acceleration,
fine rail like handling, and solid braking. The transmission
shifted smoothly. Non-working items include the left low beam,
right taillight and turn signal, and the brake lights.
A great color combo all season driver with the convertible, and
hardtop, and original items that include jack, owners manual, and
spare wheel. A classy, sculpted profile sports car made in America
and definitely iconic in its reputation and looks for this year.
This Vette in stunning Nassau Blue is definitely worth a second
look.
