Vehicle Description
Based on the venerable R107 platform, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SL was
first introduced in 1986 exclusively to markets in United States,
Japan and Australia. It offered the most powerful engine in any SL
during the 1980s: a 227 hp, 5.6 Liter V8. This enabled the 560 SL
to achieve a top speed of 130 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph
in 6.5 seconds, both slightly faster than previous SL models
despite its increased weight. That same model year, the rear
suspension and limited slip differential were also improved to meet
the requirements for the increased power. In addition to
performance, the 560 SL offered a level of safety and luxury
fitting the Mercedes-Benz nameplate. It came standard with
anti-lock brakes, leather upholstery, alarm system and airbag.
These features were not cheap, as the 560 SL had a retail price in
excess of $48,000. This hefty figure did not deter many potential
buyers, and the 560 SL proved to be one of the best-selling
Mercedes-Benz models of the late 80s with annual sales exceeding
12,000 cars. The R107 was lower and leaner than its predecessor,
and designer Friedrich Geiger is credited with creating its
elegant, understated styling. Because of the superb design, this
platform remained virtually unchanged for 17 years of production,
making it one of the longest-running passenger vehicles in Mercedes
history. This lovely classic is the epitome of the 560 SL/R107
combination, since 1989 was its last year of production. Original
features include the matching hardtop and dark brown soft top,
automatic antenna and Becker Grand Prix radio. A ceramic coating
was recently applied to the paint, making the car appear as if
brand-new. All paint is the original finish. The Parchment leather
interior is lovely, with few blemishes or signs of wear, and the
carpeting is clean and well-maintained. In addition, all four alloy
wheels are free of curb rash and look new. The wood trim gleams and
is free of fading or cracks, and the black dash is in excellent
condition. The original Becker Grand Prix stereo works as it
should, as do all of the gauges. The door panels are clean and
tight. Also included are the original first aid kit, owner's
manual, radio operation guide, paint care guide, restraint system
manual, SL soft top guide and extra keys. With only 38,089 original
miles, this striking SL has been with the second owner since 1991.
It has been meticulously maintained and never driven in the winter.
A clean CARFAX report and service records accompany the car and can
be seen on the VMC website. Four radial tires were added in 2013,
showing approximately 4,000 miles of wear. The original spare is in
the trunk and has never touched the ground. Please note that there
are 2 small scratches, one on the trunk lid near the lock and one
on the lid where the hardtop attaches. There is also a pinhole in
the side plastic window of the soft top. These are also shown in
the photo gallery. As a user-friendly classic that has already
achieved modern collectible status, the 560 SL is one of the most
desirable of the R107 platform variants. Any Mercedes-Benz
enthusiast would be proud to cruise down the roads or attend any
car show with this sleek and powerful vehicle. Front Air
