The VW Type 2 single cab pickup was based on the iconic VW Bus, a
boxy van originally built to transport parts within the Wolfsburg,
Germany VW plant. In 1947, Dutch importer Ben Pon saw the Bus at
the plant and later sketched an idea that became the VW Type 2.
Like the Beetle, the Type 2 had a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine
that allowed the rear cargo bay to have a flat floor, creating the
perfect design for a pickup. After extensive design changes,
engineers were able to improve both its fuel efficiency and
cruising speed. Thus, the Type 2 enjoyed renewed purpose and
popularity in the 1960s. All three sides of the back bed folded
down for easier loading, and there was additional storage under the
center section. This classic pickup spent its early life on the
West Coast until it was restored in 2009. It now gleams with a
two-tone classic red and white exterior paint combination, white
bumpers and chrome accents. Restoration expert Paul Willison of
Brumos Porsche completed the mechanicals and final detailing. With
a recent fuel system service, a 4-speed manual transmission and a
4-cylinder 1200 cc engine, this Type 2 purrs along with 40 hp. The
vintage look is completed by steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and
Sprint Classic 165/80R 15-inch tires. The interior of the cab is
finished in red vinyl with complimentary white welting on the bench
seat and a white steering wheel and gear shift knob. On the dash, a
simple round gauge is the speedometer, and a working AM radio is to
its right. Seat belts are included. This Type 2 is an original
single cab pickup, making it more rare than the other VW bus
models. Get to know this amazing find, and you'll soon relive the
60s in this highly desirable, iconic VW!
