superb provenance from new.
As with all AC MK IV's, the body is all aluminum and built on the
original AC Cobra bucks. In this particular AC's car, we are going
to quote the previous owner with regard to this Mk IV's
history.
"I am the original owner of this Cobra (I will use the common
name). I bought the car after going to see Brian Angliss at his
manufacturing facility at the industrial estate adjacent to the old
Brooklands Racetrack. Brian and I spent a good part of the day
together, and he showed me the factory and manufacturing process
for making these cars. I was very impressed by the quality of the
work and the product. Brian and I then took a car out and raced up
and down the old WW II airstrip on the property. At the end of the
day I ordered my car, a Black on Black car with Red seat piping and
a hoodscoop. The order was fulfilled by Muck Motors in Buffalo, NY
once the car was manufactured. Muck was the dealer.
Once I got the car I drove it mostly for day rides in sunny weather
and several times drove it to and from my Summer home on Cape Cod
from my home outside NYC. It is wonderful to drive and beautiful to
look at. It always attracts a lot of attention. The car has never
been raced or driven hard.
I drove it approximately 9000 miles with the original powertrain,
and, after I upgraded the drive train, I have driven it about
another 1000 miles. I have loved and cherished this Mk IV from new,
but have decided it is time for someone else to have it, someone
who can love it as much as I have.
About 15 years ago when I retired I decided to upgrade the
powertrain. As I started to do my research on what to do, I studied
much about the AC Cobras to determine what to do. It struck me that
there were many variants of those original cars in engines used,
rollbars, exhausts and other things. I remember seeing the Weber
carburetor Ford engines seen in the 1960's and later, and I thought
that they were among the most beautiful engines ever seen. While
the 427 engines captured so much attention, I decided that the
weight and heat of these engines did not suit me. In addition, the
small block V-8's could easily be built with comparable power
figures but better weight and balance. While I wanted to have
hosepower and torque figures in the 400's, I also wanted to make
sure the car was very streetable, and I never envisioned racing
it.
I started with the Ford Boss block to have a 4 main-bolt engine. I
added the Stroker Eagle kit with forged pistons and put on
Edelbrock heads. The displacement is now 347 cubic engines. I
installed a Crane hydraulic cam with .509 intake lift, .532 exhaust
lift and duration of 222 degrees of intake, 232 degrees of exhaust
on a 112 centerline. I put on 4 Weber IDF 48 carburetors which I
have had set-up by a specialist referred to me by Jim Inglese. The
crank is now a forged unit. The headers and exhaust have been made
by American Racing Headers out of stainless steel. According to the
caruretor specialist he estimates that the engine generates at
least 450 horsepower. The transmission is an upgraded T-5.
I shipped the car to HRE in Long Island, NY, at the recommendation
of Shelby American. The owner Bill Andrews had enormous Cobra
expertise. He detailed the car and brought everything up to perfect
condition, including repainting the car. Bill's work is
perfect.
The car is stored inside and has been so kept for most of its
life.
I have kept the original 5.0 liter Ford engine and transmission
(and a small number of other original parts) which I will offer to
the next owner."
I think is about sums the history up in a nutshell and comes
directly from this Mk IV's one and only owner from new!
This is a proper aluminum AC Cobra with excellent provenance and
should be considered one of the best of its kind the world
over.
