Vehicle Description
The Z/28 performance package was quietly introduced for the 1967
model year so that Chevrolet's new Camaro could head straight to
the track and face off with the Mustangs and Barracudas in the SCCA
Trans Am series. The Trans Am series had a class for 2.0L to 5.0L
V-8 four seat production cars, but this limited the maximum cubic
inch engine allowable at 305ci. While the new for 69' 350CI small
block V-8 was all the rage, it wouldn't qualify to go racing with.
Chevrolet performance wizard Vince Piggins went back to the drawing
board and devised a plan to make a high performance, high revving,
small displacement V8 using parts that were already on hand at
Chevrolet Motor Division. The 327CI engine block was chosen for its
4.0-inch bore, and in went a 283CI crankshaft with its 3.0-inch
stroke. This produced an engine with a final displacement of 302
cubic inches that would happily rev to 7,000rpm thanks to a solid
lifter camshaft borrowed from the fuelie Corvette and HD valve
springs to keep the valves from floating. This mighty mouse engine
was bolted to a M21 Muncie close ratio four speed, backed up with a
3.73:1 posi rear axle, heavy duty cooling system, quick ratio
steering, heavy duty shocks and springs, and wide (for its day)
7.35x15 tires. This combination of off the shelf components turned
the Camaro into a track day warrior, and with the help of Roger
Penske and driver Mark Donahue, the Camaro went on to clinch the
Trans Am series championship for Chevrolet in 1969. The rare code
