In an era that has seen an unprecedented number of new hypercars
that continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what was
thought possible with the automobile, McLaren differentiated itself
from the competition by returning to its roots and offered
something truly unique in the form of its three-seater Speedtail.
Utilizing a layout reminiscent of the iconic McLaren F1, the
Speedtail placed the driver directly in the center of the vehicle,
allowing for optimum positioning while driving, and accommodating
two additional passengers behind the driver on either side. Also
similar to the F1, the Speedtail was built in a limited production
run of just 106 vehicles which were quickly sold to McLaren's most
highly-respected customers.
Intended as "a pure fusion of science and art in the automotive
form," the Speedtail was dubbed a "Hyper-GT" by McLaren. It is
their most aerodynamically efficient creation, a crucial factor in
the massive achievable acceleration and top speed figures. The
Speedtail is the fastest McLaren to date, with a 4.0-liter
twin-turbocharged V8 with a parallel hybrid system powertrain
developing a combined 1,036 horsepower and propelling the Speedtail
from zero to 186 miles per hour (300 kph) in just 13 seconds, on
the way to a top speed of 250 miles per hour. This massive top
speed figure was made possible because engineers designed the
Speedtail to be as aerodynamically efficient as possible from the
outset, utilizing a design that featured a host of innovations to
minimize unnecessary shutlines and allowing for an uninterrupted
flow of air from the nose to the dramatically elongated tail.
Offering an unparalleled view of the road, the Speedtail locates
the driver in the center of the car, situated inside a simple yet
well-appointed interior with a thoughtful design. The
driver-centric cockpit places the vehicle controls on the overhead
console with two screens located to the left and right of the
driver. Responsible for controlling vehicle functions and
infotainment, the screens are solely positioned with driver
convenience taken into consideration. As a result, the three-seat
interior simultaneously allows for two additional passengers while
providing an interior that feels like a single-seater cockpit for
the driver.
As a result of the extremely limited nature of the Speedtail,
McLaren introduced their VIP customers to a vast amount of bespoke
options covering every imaginable facet of the car for
unprecedented levels of McLaren Special Operations (MSO)
personalization. From all-new finer-weave carbon fiber to precious
metal options, the Speedtail was finished with a new innovative
paint technology providing an ultrafine finish and seemingly
endless possible colorways. Even McLaren would tout, "Never before
has a McLaren owner had such incredible scope to personalize their
car" and as a result, it is unlikely to find similarities among the
highly exclusive 106 examples that reside within some of the
world's most prominent collections.
Taking full advantage of this unprecedented ability to customize,
McLaren Speedtail #020 was delivered with over $500,000 in bespoke
options before a $160,000 optional roof scoop was installed by
McLaren of Philadelphia after delivery. A truly stunning
specification, this example features an MSO Kingfisher Blue with
Atlantic Blue contour effect exterior accented with Gloss Blue
tinted visual carbon fiber contrast panels in proprietary 1k 1x1
weave. Complemented by 20-inch gloss black wheel finish with
bespoke blue tinted diamond cut, lightweight carbon fiber front
wheel aero covers incorporated into the front wheel profile stay
fixed in place, creating a flat surface that keeps the passing air
snug to the body of the car. Completing the carefully selected
exterior specification, the Supernova Silver Pinstripe Perimeter
Pack and MSO bespoke Silver brake calipers along with bespoke
Sanodye Blue G dark shade exterior waist rails with a brushed and
polished finish provide the perfect contrast to the breathtaking
color combination. Further reminiscent of the McLaren F1, #020
features an MSO Bespoke Heritage Badge on the front fascia inspired
by the same hood badge used on the F1.
Blue is the dominant color inside as well, with a bespoke full
Aniline Vivid Blue and Navy interior featuring satin visual carbon
fiber in 1k 1x1 weave with a body-colored steering wheel clasp and
bespoke Blue and Magnetite brushed interior brightwork. The
interior is accented by many bespoke details such as embroidered
headrests with Speedtail silhouette on the driver seat and Speedy
Kiwi on the passenger seats in addition to bespoke seat quilting
design featuring Vivid Blue and Navy stitching. A truly unique
specification, the thoughtful design of this interior environment
perfectly ties in with the exterior in a way that can only be
accommodated on McLaren's most exclusive hand-built models such as
the Speedtail.
Delivered new through McLaren of Philadelphia, #020 is offered with
just 917 miles at the time of cataloging. Enjoyed by a single
owner, this example has been serviced exclusively by the authorized
service center at McLaren Philadelphia and is fully protected by
paint protection film installed at McLaren's recommended installer,
Topaz Detailing in London. Naturally, all 106 Speedtail allocations
were immediately reserved by those well within McLaren's inner
circle. Today, most Speedtails remain highly protected within their
respective collections, in anticipation of a similar trajectory of
McLaren's first three-seater the F1 - one of the most highly
coveted and valuable automobiles in existence. This is a rare
opportunity to acquire one of only 106 examples carefully built in
Woking, offered complete with the original individually numbered
gold titanium Snap-On tool kit along with a copy of the vehicle
build sheet.
